YORK . —Eboracum Lodge ( No . 1611 ) . —Installation day at this lodge , which was duly celebrated on the loth inst ., was characterised by especial interest beyond that which always attaches to the anniversary festivals of this lodge , in the fact that the Worshipful Master for the ensuing year is the junior member of Parliament for the city , Bro . Sir F . Milner , Bart . The popularity of the

honourable baronet , and the efforts of the members of the lodge to promote hospitality , brought together a very numerous and influential assembly of Masons from Yorkshire and the adjoining counties , and the investiture was exceptionally imposing . The brethren and visitors assembled at three o ' clock at the Masonic Rooms , Queen Hotel . In addition to the members of the lodge present the following visitors

The fact of the anniversary falling upon Lord Mayor ' s Day interfered considerably with the attendance . Bro . T . B . Whytehead was re-elected the Charity Representative of the lodge . Before the lodge was closed Bro . Whytehead rose and

said in what he was about to say he was moved both by sorrow and pleasure—sorrow that they were so soon to part with a brother who had done so much for Freemasonry in the province and for the lodge , and pleasure that many members of the lodge had spontaneously desired to render to that brother some little tribute of their respect . He alluded to Bro . J . S . Cumberland , who was soon to leave York for London . He would be a great gain to London

Masonry and a great loss to them at York . He had been intimately associated with Bro . Cumberland in Yorkshire Masonry for a number of years , and regarded him personally with the greatest respect and affection , and his loss would be to him personally irreparable . He was sure that Bro . Cumberland would require nothing to remind him of the Eboracum Lodge and York Masonry , but many of the brethren would like him to take something with him that

would show to him that they were sensible of his value . He then read an illuminated address , as follows : Worshipful Bro . John S . Cumberland , P . M ., P . P . G . J . Whytehead concluded by presenting Bro . Cumberland to the W . M ., with the request that he would attach the jewel to his bieast . In doing so , the W . M ., Sir F . G . Milner , spoke of his high estimate of the Masonic virtues of Bro . Cumberland ,

and expressed a hope that he might long live to wear the jewel . Bro . Cumberland rose to respond amid immense cheering , and said that under the circumstances of the presentation having been wholly unexpected he must crave indulgence , but he assured them briefly that he should never forget their kindness nor his happy associations with the lodge , of which he hoped to be a member so long as his means would enable him to do so , and he trusted that would be until his

death . He hoped to be able to attend some of its meetings , and he could assure them that whenever he could do anything in its interests it would be his pleasure to do it . He was too much overcome to say what he should like , but they would understand perhaps better from his silence how deeply he felt the kind compliment . The address was beautifully illuminated in gold and colours , and framed in oak , and was after the design of the Old York Grand Lodge Summons . The jewel was very

chaste in design and workmanship , and was manufactured from fine gold by Bro . George Kenning , Little Britain , London . It is a Past Master ' s jewel , and on the ribbon by which it is suspended the arms of the lodge are mounted in gold and enamel . The jewel bears a suitable inscription . At six o'clock the brethren partook of the banquet , which was excellently served by Mr . Leavesley . The Worshipful Master presided , and was supported by Bros . Whytehead , G . Milner , Cumberland , Seller , Balmford , Simpson ,

Millington , and upwards of 50 brethren and visitors . The toasts of " The Queen and the Craft , " " The Prince of Wales , M . W . G . M ., and the Grand Lodge , ' ., ' were proposed in appropriate terms by the Worshipful Master , who afterwards proposed "The Earl of Zetland , R . W . Prov . G . M ., and the Prov . Grand Lodge , " to which Bro . Whytehead , P . P . G . S . W ., responded . " The Worshipful Master , Bro . Sir F . G . Milner , Bart ., M . P ., " was proposed by Bro . Whytehead , and received with musical honours .

The Worshipful Master returned thanks , and in doing so alluded to the part he took in Freemasonry at the time of his initiation , and afterwards at the Apollo Lodge , Oxford University , and assured the brethren that he should during his year of office try his utmost to render himself worthy of the high honour they had that day conferred on him . "The Installing Master , Bro . T . B . Whytehead ; the Immediate Past Master , and the Past Masters of the

Lodge , " was proposed by the Worshipful Master , and responded to by Bro . Whytehead . " Bro . Cumberland , P . M ., " was proposed by Bro . Whytehead , who deeply regretted his approaching removal from York to London , which he was certain would be a great loss to the lodge . The toast was received with enthusiasm . Bro . Cumberland responded in feeling terms , alluding to the early history of the lodge , and to the united efforts of

the brethren , which had resulted in placing the lodge in its present prosperous condition . Bro . Cumberland then a luded to his approaching retirement from York , and concluded by proposing " Success to the Eboracum Lodge and its Officers , " which was responded to by the Senior and Junior Wardens , Bros . Turner and Brown . The toast of " The Sister Lodges and Visitors" was

coupled with the names of Bros . G . Milner and Willis , of the Royal Military Lodge ; Bro . Allison , Coborn Lodge ; and Bro . Anderson , York Lodge , who severally responded . "The Masonic Charities" was proposed by Bro . J . T . Seller , P . M ., and responded to by Bro . Turner . Bro . Dyson proposed " The Ladies , "which was responded to by Bro . Carter , and the Tyler ' s toast concluded the list .

During the evening various songs were contributed by Bros . Cumberland , Dyson , Carter , Grenville Milner , and Turner , Bro . Sample , of the York Lodge , presiding at the pianoforte , in the absence of Bro . Child . The toast list was , as usual at the anniversaries of this lodge , after one of Bro . Whitehead ' s artistic designs , canied out by Bro . Beck , of Leeds . The first page bore the arms and motto of Sir F . G . Milner , heraldically

emblazoned in colours . The second and third pages were filled with toasts , each of which was followed by a quotation from one of the Masonic versifiers of the last century , whilst on the fourth page was a facsimile of the entry on the old vellum scroll of minutes at York recording the initiation of the first baronet at the Star Inn in Stonegate , and the extract from the Leeds MS which records his election as Grand Master , the whole forming an interesting souvenir , both of the occasion and of a late Masonic discovery .

important lodge of instruction . A vote of thanks having been recorded to the Auditors , Bro . W . E . Purdue , 834 , in returning thanks , said he * vas frequently called upon to audit accounts of various institutions , but never before had it been his pleasure to audit accounts more creditably and admirably kept than those of the Hyde Park Lodge of Instruction . minutely into every item and was perfectly satisfied that the balance sheet before them that evening was not only a correct and faithful one , but one that reflected great credit and praise on their worthy Secretary .
