" He said the great charities had relieved 932 aged brethren , AvidoAvs and orphans , at a cost of £ 38 , 000 . That money had to be raised somoAvhere , and he regretted to say that Devonshire had not done much in that direction . In that province 9 men , 11 Avomen . 7 girls and 7 boys had been relieved at a total cost of . c 1 , 30 ( 1 , and it would surprise them to hear that Devonshire only contributed about one-half that sum . During the past ten years wie nact
province onty paid an average ot aiiout £ »> 00 per annum , whilst it had received in return from £ 1 , 100 to . 01 , 400 . He referred to the good work being done by the Fortescue Annuity Fund and the Devon Educational Fund and pleaded for assistance . The AV . M . had given a cheque for five guineas , instead of devoting that sum to the purchase of champagne —( applause ) . An example initiated the previous year by Bro . Prust . AV . Bro . Chapman in
responding to the toast , alluded in facetious terms to the fact that that Avas the first time he had been called upon to respond to a toast Avhich had not been drunk , Bro . Lane having quite forgotten to propose it in his anxiety to plead for assistance—( laughter ) . He remarked that a serious responsibility rested on the Devonshire Lodges in only contributing one-half of the sum received from the charities . If they would all try and do a little the amount would
be more than doubled . There Avere parts of the province in receipt of benefits which did not contribute to the funds , and severely animadverted to the lukeAvarm support accorded the P . G . M . at the late boys' festival .
