MASONIC AND GENERAL TIDINGS .

Sir Somers Vine , F . R . C . S ., F . S . S ., will preside at a lecture on the typewriter to be delivered in Exeter Hall on the 29 th inst . The State apartments at Windsor Castle will be re-opened to the public on Monday next and will be accessible to visitors every week day but Wednsday , during the Queen ' s absence nn the Continent .

The Prince of Wales was again present at the meeting held at the Hous ^ of Lords on Wednesday under the presidency of Lord Aberdare , of the Royal Commission on the Aged Poor . The relief fund raised for the benefit of the sufferers by the recent landslip at Sandgate amounts to about £ 6000 and an Executive Committee has just been appointed to administer it .

Bro . the Earl and Countess ) of Londesborough are still sojourning at Cannes , and it is gratifying to hear that his lordship has greatly benefited by the change . It is expected that he will return to England about the end of next month . Bro . Lord Carrington has been appointed Chairman of the Royal Commission , which has been appointed to enquire into , and report upon , the conditions under which land in

Wales , and Monmouthshire is held , occupied , and cultivated . The lCmpress Frederick of Germany visited the Imperial Institute on Wednesday and was conducted over the building by the Prince of Wales , Bro . Lord Herschell , Chairman of the Governing Body . Bro . Sir Frederick Abel , Organising Secretary , and Bro . Sir J . Somers Vine , Assistant Secretary .

The Duke of Westminster was present at the recent annual meeting of the Northern Workhouse Nursing Association , held at Chester under the auspices of the Bishop ot Chester , and paid a well-deserved tribute to the skilful nursing which is to be found in the metropolitan workhouse hospitals .

At the close of the performance of " Becket" at Windsor Castle on Saturday evening last , which was given , by the Queen ' s command , by Bro . Irving and his company , her Majesty was graciously pleased to express her satisfaction and the pleasure she hid derived from witnessing the performance of the late Lord Tennyson ' s drama .

The annual banquet of the Insiitute of Civil Engineers was held by permission of the benchers in thc hall of the Middle Temple , on Saturday evening last , the guests present including Bro . the Duke of Fife , the Duke of Teck , Bros . Lord Ashbourne , Lord Watson , and J . G . Shaw-Lefevre , M . P ., the Lord Mayor , Bro . Sir Charles Mills , Mr . John Morley , M . P ., Bros . S . Pope , O . C , Sir Frederick Abel , and Field-Marshal Sir Lintorn Simmons .

The annual general meeting of the Royal General Theatrical Fund was held by permission of Bro . Henry Irving , at the Lyceum Theatre , on Monday . Mr . George Alexander presided , and there was an excellent attendance of friends and supporters of thc Institution , including Bro . Irving . The report for the past year , which was very satisfactory , was adopted , and it was announced that Mr . A . W . Pinero would take the chair at the approaching anniversary festival .

The bands of the Grenadier Guards and the King ' s Dragoon Guards played for the last time previous to thc Oueen's departure for Italy in the grounds of Windsor Castle on Sunday afternoon last . Several thousands of the residents of Windsor and Eton , as well as visitors from London and elsewhere , were admitted by the Oueen ' s command and greatly enjoyed the music . The Prince and

Princess Henry of Battenberg strolled on the promenade , and the Prince of Wales walked with the Empress Frederick in the Quadrangle . We have received notice from the directors of Spiers and Pond ( Limited ) that a third instalment of 4 s . per share , less Income Tax , on account of dividend will be posted to the shareholders of the Company on the 1 st prox ., and

that the share transfer books will be closed from thc 20 th to the 31 st instant inclusive , for the purpose of preparing the warrants . This payment , with the two instalments paid on the ist of October and the 1 st of January last respectively , makes 12 s . per share on account of the year ending 31 st March , 1893 , the full dividend for which will be declared in July next .

The Queen , accompanied by the Princess Henry of Battenberg , Prince Henry having started by an earlier train , and attended by the ladies and gentlemen of the Court , left Windsor Castle , on her visit to Italy , via Portsmouth , & c , on Monday afternoon , at 4 p . m . In a couple of hours Portsmouth was reached , and here her Majesty was received by the Duke and Duchess of Connaught and Admiral the F . arlof Clanwilliam . The Royal party at once embarked

on the Victoria and Albert yacht , which was moored to 38 buoy . On Tuesday , the Royal yacht , with the Trinity yacht , Irene , in attendance , and the twin-screw gunboat , Seagull , and the screw-crusier , Indefatigible , as escort , made for Cherbourg , where her Majesty , who travelled as the Countess of Balmoral , and party disembarked , and commenced the long railway journey of 44 hours , Florence being reached on Thursday afternoon . The Queen will remain abroad till about the end of April . ~

Saturday was the anniversary of the birth of the Princess Louise Marchioness of Lome , and in honour of the event the bells of Windsor were rung , and a Royal salute fired in the Long Walk . Bro . Sir Algernon Borthwick , M . P ., intends , it is said , to spend Easter at Invercauld and enjoy some salmon fishing . Lady Borthwick , however , and Miss Borthwick will remain at Florence .

It has been arranged that this year s Army Summer Manoeuvres shall be held on the borders of Berkshire and Wiltshire , the centre of the manoeuvring ground being Swindon . The troops will assemble in all probability in September .

Madame Patti's departure for America to fulfil the series of concert engagements for which she is under contract to Mr . Marcus Meyer has been fixed for the 28 th October , when she will leave England on board the new cunarder , Lucania .

The Duke of Montrose , the Earls of Enmskillen and Coventry , Lord Hastings , Lord Marcus Beresford , Bro . Sir Frederick Milner , and General Owen Williams were among the members of Bro . the Duke of Portland's party at Welbeck during the present week .

The Duke and Duchess of Teck and their daughter , Princess May , have signified their intention of being present at the International Football Match ( Association game ) , which will be played on the Athletic Association ground , Richmond , on Saturday , the ist prox .

The Countess Spencer has left London for Pans , en route for Florence , and will be joined by the Earl—who is First Lord of the Admiralty—in a day or two . Subsequently the Earl and Countess will visit Malta and the other naval stations in the Mediterranean in the Admiralty yacht Surprise , and will be abroad altogether for some three or four weeks .

Thc University Boat-race was rowed over the usual course , from Putney to Mortlake , on Wednesday afternoon . The weather was magnificent , and there was a vast concourse of spectators along the whole li . ie of route , who lustily cheered the rival crews as they strained every muscle to win . Oxford was the favourite , and justified the

confidence of practical oarsmen by winning , after a tremendous struggle , by two-and-half lengths , in 18 min . 47 sec . —the shortest time on record . Thc Light Blues struggled gamely to the very last , as may be shown by the fact that till Chiswick Eyot was reached , their opponents were never quite a full length ahead .

On the 17 th inst . the annual social meeting and assembly in connection with Lodge Royal Arch , No . 122 , was held in the lodge room , Parliamentary Close , Perth . At the social meeting there were over 500 persons present , presided over by Bro . John Mackenzie , 1 . P . M . After tea , vocal and instrumental music was given by thc Misses Fyfe , Miss Eraser , Miss Nelson , Miss Thomson , Miss

We regret to record the death at Ramsgate , on the 20 th inst ., after a long illness , of the wife of Bro . Thomas Cohu P . M ., of the Lion and Lamb Lodge , No . 192 . * The City Corporation will give 150 guineas in special prizes , the first of which will be a silver cup of the value of 30 guineas , to be competed for at the Bisley Meeting .

A billiard match has just been arranged between John Roberts and Charles Dawson of Huddersfield . The terms are that the champion shall concede 9000 out of 24 , 000 , and that the stakes shall be £ 1000 aside . The match will com . mence on April ist .

It has been finally arranged that the German Emperor will visit Cowes during the yachting week this season . His Majesty is expected to arrive on the 20 th July , and his yacht , the Meteor , will be again fitted out , though there are reasons for believing that she will not be raced as frequently as she was last year .

The Empress Frederick , accompanied by the Prince of Wales , visited Mr . A . Gilbert ' s studio ¦ in Maida-vale on Thursday , to inspect the model of the recumbent figure of the Duke of Clarence and Avondale , which he is executing for the sarcophagus in the Albert Memorial Chapel , Windsor Castle .

The Princess of Wales , accompanied by her daughters the Duke of York , and suite , arrived at Naples on fhurs ! day evening from Rome , and proceeded at once on board the Royal yacht Osborne , which is lying in the military port .

The latest reports as to the health of the Marquis of Salisbury , who has been suffering from an attack of influenza , are to the effect that his lordship has been making fair progress towards recovery—in fact , his recovery has been thus far so satisfactory that his lordshi p has by no . means abandoned his hopes of being able to fulfil his political engagement in Belfast on the 4 th prox .

Princess Mary Adelaide , Duchess of Teck , and her daughter dined with Lord and Lady Wimborne , at Wimborne House , Arlington-street , on Wednesday evening , when the Prince of Hohenlohe , the Marquis of Abergavenny , the Marchionesses ot Londonderry and Downshire , Marquis Camden , Viscount and Viscountess Chelsea , 'the Speaker and Miss Peel , and Bro . Sir Algernon Borthwick were among the guests .

THE LOXFIELD LODGE , No . 2450 . —We are asked to supply an omission in our report of the consecration of the above lodge which appeared on the nth inst ., to the effect that the Consecrating Officers , Bros . Letchworth , Slingsby Roberts , and H . Langton , together with the Installing Master , were unanimously elected honorary members of the lodge , on the proposition of the W . M .

His Royal Highness the Duke of Connaught has graciously signified to Bro . Lennox Browne his pleasure to become Patron of the Central London Throat and Ear Hospital , Gray ' s Inn-road , of which the Archbishop of Canterbury is President , and has headed the . list of subscribers to the Building Extention Fund , rendered necessary b y the increased demand for accommodation , by a donation of 20 pounds .

The City Corporation met on Thursday for the last time before the Easter holidays , and in the course of their sitting voted 200 guineas to the Sandgate Relief Fund , and 100 guineas to the Queensland Relief Fund . The report of the Sanitary Committee for thePort of London was at the same time adopted , having for its object the protection of our shores from the possible introduction ol cholera in the coming season , for which desirable end all practicable precautions appear to have been taken without regard to expense .

In the person of Bro . William Martin , who died in Aberdeen , on the 7 th instant , in his 93 rd year , the Craft in that province has lost its oldest member . Bro . Martin has been connected with the Operative Lodge , No . 150 , since December ^ 1823 , and was thus in the 70 th year of his membership . He was laid aside several years ago b y failing heabh , and has since been maintained by the lodge , and Utterly was admitted as annuitant under the extended scheme of Scottish Masonic Benevolence . Bro . Martin leaves a daughter and a granddaughter .

CHICAGO EXHIMTION . —A private view of the carriages for the Chicago Exhibition was given at Messrs . Morgan and Co . ' s West-end branch , Old Bond-street , W ., on Wednesday and Thursday last . Amongst those that call for special mention is a fine drag , which is hung much lower than usual , the wheels of which are 3 inches nearer together

than any drag hitherto made . A new and clever patent of Morgan ' s is a connecting rod between the hind bed and the cross spring to prevent the body swaying when the break is used . The whole exhibit ( which consists of eight carriages ) will fully represent the carriage building industry of England , as we understand Messrs . Morgan and Co . are the only English firm of coachbuildcrs sending to Chicago .

that the share transfer books will be closed from thc 20 th to the 31 st instant inclusive , for the purpose of preparing the warrants . This payment , with the two instalments paid on the ist of October and the 1 st of January last respectively , makes 12 s . per share on account of the year ending 31 st March , 1893 , the full dividend for which will be declared in July next .

The Queen , accompanied by the Princess Henry of Battenberg , Prince Henry having started by an earlier train , and attended by the ladies and gentlemen of the Court , left Windsor Castle , on her visit to Italy , via Portsmouth , & c , on Monday afternoon , at 4 p . m . On Tuesday , the Royal yacht , with the Trinity yacht , Irene , in attendance , and the twin-screw gunboat , Seagull , and the screw-crusier , Indefatigible , as escort , made for Cherbourg , where her Majesty , who travelled as the Countess of Balmoral , and party disembarked , and commenced the long railway journey of 44 hours , Florence being reached on Thursday afternoon . The Queen will remain abroad till about the end of April . ~

It has been arranged that this year s Army Summer Manoeuvres shall be held on the borders of Berkshire and Wiltshire , the centre of the manoeuvring ground being Swindon . The troops will assemble in all probability in September .

Madame Patti's departure for America to fulfil the series of concert engagements for which she is under contract to Mr . Marcus Meyer has been fixed for the 28 th October , when she will leave England on board the new cunarder , Lucania .

We regret to record the death at Ramsgate , on the 20 th inst ., after a long illness , of the wife of Bro . Thomas Cohu P . M ., of the Lion and Lamb Lodge , No . 192 . * The City Corporation will give 150 guineas in special prizes , the first of which will be a silver cup of the value of 30 guineas , to be competed for at the Bisley Meeting .

A billiard match has just been arranged between John Roberts and Charles Dawson of Huddersfield . The terms are that the champion shall concede 9000 out of 24 , 000 , and that the stakes shall be £ 1000 aside . The match will com . mence on April ist .

It has been finally arranged that the German Emperor will visit Cowes during the yachting week this season . His Majesty is expected to arrive on the 20 th July , and his yacht , the Meteor , will be again fitted out , though there are reasons for believing that she will not be raced as frequently as she was last year .

The Empress Frederick , accompanied by the Prince of Wales , visited Mr . A . Gilbert ' s studio ¦ in Maida-vale on Thursday , to inspect the model of the recumbent figure of the Duke of Clarence and Avondale , which he is executing for the sarcophagus in the Albert Memorial Chapel , Windsor Castle .

In the person of Bro . William Martin , who died in Aberdeen , on the 7 th instant , in his 93 rd year , the Craft in that province has lost its oldest member . Bro . CHICAGO EXHIMTION . —A private view of the carriages for the Chicago Exhibition was given at Messrs . Morgan and Co . ' s West-end branch , Old Bond-street , W ., on Wednesday and Thursday last . Amongst those that call for special mention is a fine drag , which is hung much lower than usual , the wheels of which are 3 inches nearer together

than any drag hitherto made . A new and clever patent of Morgan ' s is a connecting rod between the hind bed and the cross spring to prevent the body swaying when the break is used . The whole exhibit ( which consists of eight carriages ) will fully represent the carriage building industry of England , as we understand Messrs . Morgan and Co . are the only English firm of coachbuildcrs sending to Chicago .
