" HEARTY GOOD WISHES . " To the Editor of the "Freemason " Dear Sir and Brother , As Bro . Wingfield Meadows is good enough to name my " Handbook" in connection with the above subject , may I ask , with all due diffidence , to be allowed

to give my views on this matter . We , as Masons , are professedly brothers and equals , and every regular lodge of our own , or any recognised Constitution , is the peer of every sister lodge ; therefore , it appears to me that every member of any lodge when visiting another lodge should have the inherent rig / it , without any special permission given or asked ,

to give expression to those feelings of friendship and amity which bind us in the mystic tie , on behalf of that body to which he belongs . It would appear an absurd piece of red-tapeism if when a brother found himself able to " visit" he should be obliged to inform his W . M . of the fact before he could extend one of the pleasantest courtesies of the Craft to the-brethren whose hospitality he was about to

THE DORSET MASONIC CALENDAR , A . D . ISOI . The editor of this compact , exhaustive , and well printed directory is Bro . Jno . A . Sherren , F . R . Hist . S ., of St . Mary-street , Weymouth , who is also the printer and publisher . In all respects this annual is as near perfection as possible , includes within its 10 S pages all that could reasonably be looked for in a manual of the kind , and

indeed much more than could be fairly expected considering the labour involved in the compilation of so many particulars . There are 13 lodges in Dorset with O 39 members , seven Royal Arch chapters , with 205 companions ( a large number in proportion to size of province ); five Mark lodges ( one in abeyance , unfortunately ) , with some 100 members ; two Knight Templar Preceptones , and two Rose Croix chapters .

Lists of Grand Officers , Prov . G . Officers , Past Masters , Past Principals , & c . Names of all the brethren and full table of votes for the Charities , the grand total being 2903 ( arranged under lodges ) are all dul y tabulated , and dates of appointments carefully noted . Statements of accounts are also inserted , and important " Masonic notes " which cannot fail to prove most useful to the Masters and Secretaries who occasionally need a little " brushing up " as to

their duties , especially on entering on the responsibilities of office . The " Dorset Masonic Charity , " with Bro . S . R . Baskett as the efficient Secretary , is to the fore , as usual , and is doing real good work . All we can say is that if the editors of such pre-eminently useful publications as this Calendar , and some others already reviewed , arc not warmly thanked for their valuable services they ought to he , for they well deserve unstinted praise .
