Bro . William Watson , of Leeds , the Honorary Librarian of the celebrated West Yorkshire Masonic Collection , was affiliated as a member of the " Lodge of Edinburgh , " No . I , Scotland , on Tuesday , the 14 th
inst , by being personally obligated as a member ol that ancient lodge , which has records from the year 1599 to the present time . The oldest of the kind in the world . * * *
The election took place some time since , but Bro . Watson was unable to afford the time to attend ere now . The honour undoubtedly is well deserved , and his many English friends will be delighted to hear that Bro . Watson has had such a special compliment paid him in the North .

The annual festival meeting of this lodge was held on Friday , the 10 th inst ., at the Masonic Hall , Halfordstreet , Leicester , under the presidency of Bro . the Hon . Paulyn Hastings , W . M . 2431 , P . M . 779 , Prov . S . G . W . The acting officers present on the occasion were Bros .

and together with his companions was duly saluted . The Acting W . M ., alter tendering the gavel to the D . P . G . M ., forthwith declared the special affair of the evening to be in hand . This consisted of a perambulation of the lodge with explanatory remarks upon the paintings , engravings , & c , that line its walls , by brethren as follows : Bro .

Withers , 523 , and explanatory notes on the same from Bros . WITHERS and THORP , Preceptor , who took the opportunity of urging upon the brethren present to do all they can towards
founding and enriching by their contribution of suitable objects a Masonic museum in connection with the Leicester Masonic Hall . The idea was favourabl y received by the brethren . The lodge was closed , and then about 60 of the brethren did ample justice to the excellent supper provided by the Steward , Bro . J . G . Bower , P . M . 1391 ,

The toasts of the evening after the customary loyal ones , were : "The Presiding Officer , " "Prosperity to the Union Lodge of Instruction , " and " The Visitors , " and the proceedings were enlivened by songs and recitations from , among others , Bros . G . 1 . Pegg , E . C . Kilty , J . Hall Lees , W . Barrow , Mus . Doc , H . G . Mirnott , E . P . Marriette , and A . Chamberlain .
The Empress Frederick of Germany took leave of hir M jtsty at Windsor on Alonday and travelled thence to London , where she has taken up her residence in Buckingham Palace . The Princess Louise Marchioness of Lome and the Marquis of Lome also left the Castle the same day on the termination of their visit to her Majesty .
The Princess of Wales , who , with her daughters the Princesses Victoria and Maud and the Duke of York , is c . uising in the Mediterranean on the Yoyal yacht Osborne , after visiting Elba journeyed by rail to Rome , where she visited the King and Queen of Italy . Subsequently the Rojal visitors called upon the British Ambassador , and inspected the Colosseum and the Forum .

" HEARTY GOOD WISHES . " To the Editor of the "Freemason " Dear Sir and Brother , As Bro . Wingfield Meadows is good enough to name my " Handbook" in connection with the above subject , may I ask , with all due diffidence , to be allowed
to give my views on this matter . We , as Masons , are professedly brothers and equals , and every regular lodge of our own , or any recognised Constitution , is the peer of every sister lodge ; therefore , it appears to me that every member of any lodge when visiting another lodge should have the inherent rig / it , without any special permission given or asked ,
to give expression to those feelings of friendship and amity which bind us in the mystic tie , on behalf of that body to which he belongs . It would appear an absurd piece of red-tapeism if when a brother found himself able to " visit" he should be obliged to inform his W . M . of the fact before he could extend one of the pleasantest courtesies of the Craft to the-brethren whose hospitality he was about to

VISITING WORSHIPFUL MASTERS . To the Editor of the " Freemason . " Dear Sir and Brother , In reference to your answer to " P . M . " which appeared in last week ' s Freemason on the subject of a W . M . of a lodge wearing his collar and jewel of office
when visiting another lodge , let me beg you to observe that in Rule 308 there is a "stop" after the word " Masters . " Bearing this in mind , the meaning of the rule seems to me to be that " The collars of the officers of private lodges are to be worn only in their own lodges , or when representing their lodges as Masters or ( when representing their lodges as ) Wardens in the
Grand Lodge or in their Provincial or District Grand Lodge . W . ol West Lancashire , has recently presented to the Grand Lodge two excellent mementos of the convivial customs of our Masonic ancestors in the shape of a jug and punch bowl , a description of which may not be uninteresting .
DESCKIPTION OK J . Leeds Ware , transfer printing , height gV \ n . On one side at top , Level , with cherub , and sun , moon , and seven stars , below this the All-seeing Eye over a wreath , apparently of olive and palm , enclosing the following motto :
"The world is in pain Our secrets to gain But still let them wonder and gaze on l '" or they ne'er can divine The word or the sign Of a free and an accepted Mason . " Below this , live-pointed star with G in centre , at the sides of star , square , and compasses , enclosing bible

and the ladder , level , and other emblems . Under the spout , square , and compasses displayed fellowcraft with letter G in centre of an irradiated triangle . On the other side of jug are wreath of olive and palm square pavement , on which stand two pillars surmounted by figures of Faith and Charity ; Hope in centre supported by anchor and seated on book
Under this last figure is space between pillars , sun moon , and stars ; the All-seeing Eye , level , plumb rule , and trowel ; square and compasses fully displayed and resting on bible , cross pens , pick and spade , mallet cross keys , hour glass , chisel ; motto— " Memento Mori " in scroll , 42 Prop . Euclid ; coffin , five-pointed
star , with letter G ; cock , and beehive and bees . On right hand pillar , motto— " Vide Audi Tace . " On left hand pillar , motto— " Sit lux et lux fuit . " This jug is of graceful design , somewhat egg-shaped in the bod y , and is about five inches in diameter at bottom and four inches at top .

THE DORSET MASONIC CALENDAR , A . D . ISOI . The editor of this compact , exhaustive , and well printed directory is Bro . Jno . A . Sherren , F . R . Hist . S ., of St . Mary-street , Weymouth , who is also the printer and publisher . In all respects this annual is as near perfection as possible , includes within its 10 S pages all that could reasonably be looked for in a manual of the kind , and
indeed much more than could be fairly expected considering the labour involved in the compilation of so many particulars . There are 13 lodges in Dorset with O 39 members , seven Royal Arch chapters , with 205 companions ( a large number in proportion to size of province ); five Mark lodges ( one in abeyance , unfortunately ) , with some 100 members ; two Knight Templar Preceptones , and two Rose Croix chapters .
Lists of Grand Officers , Prov . G . Officers , Past Masters , Past Principals , & c . Names of all the brethren and full table of votes for the Charities , the grand total being 2903 ( arranged under lodges ) are all dul y tabulated , and dates of appointments carefully noted . Statements of accounts are also inserted , and important " Masonic notes " which cannot fail to prove most useful to the Masters and Secretaries who occasionally need a little " brushing up " as to
their duties , especially on entering on the responsibilities of office . The " Dorset Masonic Charity , " with Bro . S . R . Baskett as the efficient Secretary , is to the fore , as usual , and is doing real good work . All we can say is that if the editors of such pre-eminently useful publications as this Calendar , and some others already reviewed , arc not warmly thanked for their valuable services they ought to he , for they well deserve unstinted praise .

102 5 J — MASONIC JUG AND PUNCH BOWL . Bro . James De Bels Adam , P . P . S . G . W . ol West Lancashire , has recently presented to the Grand Lodge two excellent mementos of the convivial customs of our Masonic ancestors in the shape of a jug and punch bowl , a description of which may not be uninteresting .
DESCKIPTION OK J . Leeds Ware , transfer printing , height gV \ n . On one side at top , Level , with cherub , and sun , moon , and seven stars , below this the All-seeing Eye over a wreath , apparently of olive and palm , enclosing the following motto :
"The world is in pain Our secrets to gain But still let them wonder and gaze on l '" or they ne'er can divine The word or the sign Of a free and an accepted Mason . " Below this , live-pointed star with G in centre , at the sides of star , square , and compasses , enclosing bible

and the ladder , level , and other emblems . Under the spout , square , and compasses displayed fellowcraft with letter G in centre of an irradiated triangle . On the other side of jug are wreath of olive and palm square pavement , on which stand two pillars surmounted by figures of Faith and Charity ; Hope in centre supported by anchor and seated on book
Under this last figure is space between pillars , sun moon , and stars ; the All-seeing Eye , level , plumb rule , and trowel ; square and compasses fully displayed and resting on bible , cross pens , pick and spade , mallet cross keys , hour glass , chisel ; motto— " Memento Mori " in scroll , 42 Prop . Euclid ; coffin , five-pointed
star , with letter G ; cock , and beehive and bees . On right hand pillar , motto— " Vide Audi Tace . " On left hand pillar , motto— " Sit lux et lux fuit . " This jug is of graceful design , somewhat egg-shaped in the bod y , and is about five inches in diameter at bottom and four inches at top .
DESCRIPTION OK PUNCH BOWL . Same ware as jug , diameter 9 J inches , height 4 J inches . Inside round rim , Masonic emblems in four groups . First group , plumb rule and square interlaced with ribbons , . behind these a tracing board ; second group , a jewel similar to Grand Master ' s jewel of present day , sun in centre , interlaced as before : third
group , mallet and trowel with ribbons as before ; fourth group , square and compasses , the compasses only cross the longer leg of square , ribbons as before . In bottom , Motto— " A heart that conceals And the tongue that never reveals . " The All-Seeing Eye , under this a shield , interlaced with Masonic emblems inside the shield . W . Master

Similar design to that inside bowl but without first motto or shield , also on other side the Eye . Motto— " Deum time et regim honora . " Two pillars , old P . M . jewel with sun , surrounded by various emblems similar to those on jug except cock .

THE DORSET MASONIC CALENDAR , A . D . ISOI . The editor of this compact , exhaustive , and well printed directory is Bro . Jno . A . Sherren , F . R . Hist . S ., of St . Mary-street , Weymouth , who is also the printer and publisher . In all respects this annual is as near perfection as possible , includes within its 10 S pages all that could reasonably be looked for in a manual of the kind , and
indeed much more than could be fairly expected considering the labour involved in the compilation of so many particulars . There are 13 lodges in Dorset with O 39 members , seven Royal Arch chapters , with 205 companions ( a large number in proportion to size of province ); five Mark lodges ( one in abeyance , unfortunately ) , with some 100 members ; two Knight Templar Preceptones , and two Rose Croix chapters .
Lists of Grand Officers , Prov . G . Officers , Past Masters , Past Principals , & c . Names of all the brethren and full table of votes for the Charities , the grand total being 2903 ( arranged under lodges ) are all dul y tabulated , and dates of appointments carefully noted . Statements of accounts are also inserted , and important " Masonic notes " which cannot fail to prove most useful to the Masters and Secretaries who occasionally need a little " brushing up " as to
their duties , especially on entering on the responsibilities of office . The " Dorset Masonic Charity , " with Bro . S . R . Baskett as the efficient Secretary , is to the fore , as usual , and is doing real good work . All we can say is that if the editors of such pre-eminently useful publications as this Calendar , and some others already reviewed , arc not warmly thanked for their valuable services they ought to he , for they well deserve unstinted praise .
