THE FIEAltlDS . Sir Henry James has given something sensible regarding the Pyramids , and their angles of inclination , < fcc . He shows that their builders were looking to the stones when constructing them—not to the stars . —W . P . B . FEEEMA SONET ASfD ITS OEIGINATOES .
It seems to me that the study of what may be called the architectural portions of our rituals , & c , shows that they were manufactured hy the disciples of Palladio . At the beginning of last century the pseudo-classic was all the rage , while the spirit and grand works of our 13 th and 14 th century Masons
were then despised ! Palladio , who was born in 1518 , flourished in the latter half of the 16 th century , and died in 15 S 0 . His " Treatise on Architecture " served as a great test-book for our 17 th and 18 th century architects . The Palladian style was introduced into England by Inigo Jones ( first half of
17 th century ) , and greatly died away in the time of Sir "William Chambers , who was horn in 1726 and died in 1796 . Had speculative Masonry really been practised by our cathedral builders , we , as their supposed successors , should have rather more of their spirit and ideas amongst us than we have ; whereas the ideas we do have breathe the spirit extant at the
