On this occasion the Lord Mayor and the lesser magnates of the City will be in full force , and there will also be a march past of the London Rifle Volunteers .

Christ ' s Hospital held its annual speech-day on Wednesday , but , owing to indisposition , the Lord Mayor was unable , as usual , to preside , and accordingly Alderman Sir Benjamin Phillips acted as his representative , the Lady Mayoress , however , being present with Alderman and Sheriff Ellis and other notabilities . The Orations were

delivered very effectively , and were deservedly applauded . Then the University distinctions gained by past and present Blues since last speech-day were announced , and then

followed the agreeable but somewhat tedious business of distributing the prizes . This over , Sir B . Phillips shortly addressed the company , and then , the National Anthem having been sung , the boys set off for their Midsummer holidays .

There seems little doubt that in the recent fighting the Carlists have got the worst of it , but the question is , have they been effectively beaten so that the chance of bringing the war to an end is any nearer ? We have so oiten heard that Don Carlos is hopelessly beaten that we have become

hopeless of ever hearing anything else . In Prance the late compact between the centres appears to have come to grief through the action of M . Gambetta to the great satisfaction of the Imperialists . Elsewhere the news , except so far as it

relates to the recent storms and floods , which appear to have been pretty general over the Continent , is of little , if any , interest . We may add that the Pope is well in health , but obstinate , as usual , as regards one point . We need not explain further .

The regular meeting of the Grand Lodge of Benevolence was held on Wednesday , 21 st inst ., at Freemasons' Hall , Great Queen-street , Bro . J . Nunn P . G . S . B . in the chair . The Baroness Burdctt Coutts is about to present a set of the "chairs of office " to the Lodge of Freemasons , No . 1278 under Grand Lodge of England , Avhich is named after her . The presentation will be made by the Baroness , in person , at a meeting of the Lodge , Avhich has been fixed

for Thursday next , at Freemasons' Hall , Great Queen Street , at five o ' clock , Avhen the members , by a dispensation from his Royal Highness the Grand Master , will be alloAved to Avear " clothing . " The Baroness , in her letters to the Lodge , having recognised the charitable disposition

of the Craft , has expressed her earnest desire to be a co-Avorker Avith Freemasonry . The brethren of the Lodge will entertain the Baroness at a repast , and this Avill be the first occasion in England in which a lady has been present Avhen Lodge " furniture , " as such , has been in tho room .

ON Wednesday afternoon , at 4 p . m ., a Council of Excellent Masters was opened at the Hall , No . 2 Red Lion Square , W . Bro . F . Binckes presiding . The ceremony was impressively rendered with the assistance of Worshipful Bro . Hyde Pullen . A Council of Royal and Select

Masters Avas afterwards opened , the degrees ably worked , and the degree of Super Excellent Master also communicated by Avay of lecture . The ceremonies of the Royal and Select are amongst the most beautiful knoAvn in Masonry , especially when rendered with Bro . Pullen ' s kind aid .

A Lodge of the Order of St . Lawrence , a curious degree of Lancashire operative origin , Avas subsequently opened , and amongst several candidates , III . Bro . N . Philips was dubbed a Knight of the Gridiron . A lecture from Bro . C . F . Matier concluded the ceremony .

Considerable amounts havo been sent in lately by its representatives at the Festivals , and tho sura of five hundred francs has been remitted to the Supreme Council of France , as a contribution for sufferers by the inundations .

/ ~ \ N Saturday the otlicers of the Grand Lodge of English Freemasons ^ consecrated and constituted , under the warrant of the Graud Master , a new Lodge , named after tho Princess of Wales and the Palace on JInsivell-hill . The new Lodge is held iu a suite of rooms in the Palace . The first Worshipful Master is Brother J . C . Parkinson , Past Grand Deaoon , and at the banquet which followed , the

Worshipful Master , in proposing " Tho Health , of the Grand Master , referred to the forthcoming visit of the Prince of Wales to India , and said that his Eoyal Highness would see symbols of Freemasonry ou tho monuments which had stood iu India from time immemorial , bntheAYould also see , in the institutions of that country , that the spirit of tho Craft

was entirely absent . In reply to the toast of his health , the Worshipful Master remarked that since the grand demonstration at the Albert Hall , and as one of the earliest acts of grace of the Royal Grand Master , the Grand Lodge of Italy had been recognised officially by tho Grand Lodge of England . Tho Masons of England and the Masons

of Italy were now linked together by the strongest paternal ties , professing tho same principles , aud united for tho hi gh purposes of tho Craft ( cheers ) . Thcro were nearly 200 Lodges , and about 10 , 000 Masons working under the Grand Orient of Italy , and the Orient

included illustrious patriots and some of the most distinguished men in Italy ( cheers ) . The Freemasonry of Italy was now identical with , that of England , aud its recognition by the Grand Master of England , was a complete answer to the heated vituperations of Pope , prelate , aud pamphleteers . —Standard .
