Last Monday afternoon Bro . the Rig ht Hon . the Earl of Derby and the Countess of Derby opened a grand bazaar , fete , and fancy fair in Stanley Park , Liverpool , in aid of the funds of the Stanley Hospital . The grand gala was to continue during the week , and many well-known Masonic brethren took a conspicuous part in promoting its success . Amongst the number being Bros .

Dr . J . Kellett Smith , P . P . G . R . ; John Houlding P . G . R . ; Dr . Costine , P . M . 216 ; Dr . Sheldon , P . M . 1094 ; G . Fowler , P . Armstrong , F . Emery , E . Laker , R . B . Bainbridge , and others . Fine weather favoured the opening ceremony , and it is expected that several thousand pounds

will be secured towards building two new wings to the hospital . Besides the bazaar there were numerous other attractions , including dramatic and musical performances , balloon ascents , cricket and foot-ball matches , athletic and old English sports , dancing on the platform , pony racing , & e .

Bro : Theobald Ringer , Bengal Arnry , P . M . Light of the North Lodge , No . 130 S , Dalhousie , Punjab , has retired from the service with the honorary rank of Dy . Surgeon-General . Bro . Ringer is serving as Steward this year for the Province of Wilts and Lodge 1533 , both for the Girls' and Boys' Institutions . Bro . John Hodges was elected on Saturday , the 27 th ult ., W . M . of the Orpheus Lodge , No . 170 O , for the

ensuing year . We are requested to remind our readers that the Fifteen Sections will be worked at the Sincerity Lodge of Instruction , 174 , which meets at the Three Nuns Hotel , adjoining the Aldgate Station of the Metropolitan Railway . Lodge will be opened at seven o ' clock prompt , on Monday next , the 5 th inst " , and Bro . G . H . Stephens , 13 S 2 and

S . D . 1623 , will preside , and be supported by Bros . B . Cundick , P . M . 1421 , as S . VV . ; W . H . Myers , P . M . S 20 and 1445 , as J . W . ; C . H . Webb , P . M . 1607 and 174 ( the esteemed Preceptor ); and other eminent workers . The lodge-room is very comfortable , is easy of access from all quarters , and a good muster is expected . Mr . Leopold Waencr , author of the successful

farce , " The Latch Key , " now being played nightly at Sadlers Wells , amid roars of laughter , has engaged to prepare a succession of similar laughable pieces for the present management . Shortly there will be produced at the historical house in Clerkenwell the second of the series , under the title of " Who Did It ? " Mr . Wagner has also in hand a much more important work , in the form of

modern metropolitan life , which may also see the light ere long in the same theatre . The Speech Day at Eton , which does duty for the old " Eton Montem , " takes place on Monday next , in consequence of the 4 th of June , the anniversary of old George the Third's birthday , falling on a Sunday . On this occasion the proceedings will be of a more than usually brilliant

character , as the Prince and Princess of Wales will be present , His Royal Highness having undertaken to unveil the memorial raised in the College Chapel in honour of those officers who were educated at Eton , and fell during the late South African and Afghan campaigns . Bro . the Duke of Albany will preside at the anniversary dinner at Willis ' s Rooms , on Saturday , the 24 th inst .

The Crusaders Lodge of Instruction , meeting at St . John's Gate , Clerkenwell , is adjourned until the second Thursday in September , at nine p . m . Bro . Brackstone Baker , P . G . D ., has , with the approbation of the M . W . G . Master , received from the Grand Secretary his patent of appointment as representative of the Grand Lodge of the State of New York at the

Grand Lodge of England . Bro . Brackstone Baker was also elected Renter Warden of the Turners' Company on Ascension Day . As is usual , whenever the honour of a baronetcy is conferred on a Lord Mayor of London , in order to commemorate a particular service rendered by the Corporation

or a Royal visit , the Sheriffs of London and Middlesex have not been forgotten , and it gives us great pleasure to be in a position to congratulate Bro . Alderman Hanson and Mr . Ogg , who occupy those important positions , on the knighthood which Her Majesty has intimated her intention of bestowing upon them . May they long live to enjoy an honour that nas been so well deserved !

Bro . Edward Clarke , Q . C ., made a long speech on the Derby Day in the House of Commons on the Prevention of Crime ( Ireland ) Bill . Bros . Earl of Shaftesbury , Earl Percy , M . P ., and Viscount Ebrington , M . P ., took part at a meeting , at Willis ' , on Wednesday , of the Metropolitan Convalescent Institution .

A new Library and Scientific Institute , Museum and School of Art , was opened at Berwick-on-Tweed , on Tuesday , by Colonel Milne Holme , M . P ., supported by-Mr . H . E . H . Jerningham , M . P ., the Mayor and Corporation . Lady Tweedmond gave a reception at Brook House on Wednesday week , which was attended by , amongst others , Bros , the Duke of Marlborough , the

Earl of Leitrim , Lord Onslow , the Marquis of Tweeddale , Viscount Ebrington , M . P ., Sir Hedworth Williamson , Viscount Powerscourt , and Sir James M'Garel Hogg . Bro . the Earl ' of Northesk and General Sir Henry de Bathe are Directors of St . James ' s Residental Chambers' Company , which has been formed to provide comfortable chambers at a moderate cost for gentlemen in the West-end .

Sir Reginald Hanson , Alderman Fowler , M . P ., the Earl of Shaftesbury , Alderman Stone , P . G . J . VV ., and Alderman Staples will be present at the festival of the National Hospital for Diseases of the Heart and Paralysis , to be held on the 6 th inst ., when H . R . H . the Duke of Cambridge will preside .

Bros , the Earl of Derby , K . G ., and J . B . Firth , M . P ., have made a donation of several volumes to the Bethnal Green Free Library . Mrs . Kendal has had not onjy to play the important character of The Squire in the play of the

same name lately , but also to nurse her husband and children , who have been laid up with measles . Bro . Kendal has had so severe an attack that his life was almost despaired of . We are glad he will shortly resume his old place at St . James ' s Theatre .

Bro . tlie Duke of Athole was present at a meeting eo make arrangements for the forthcoming Royal Caledonian Ball , to be held at Willis ' s Rooms on the 19 th inst . Bro . Lord Richard Grosvenor , M . P ., P . G . W ., and Bro . Sir Watkin VV . Wynn have each sent a cheque

for £ 10 to the Sir Hugh Owen Memorial Fund . H . R . H . Prince Leopold , Duke of Albany , P . G . M ., has announced the intention of the Duchess to become a patroness of the Chelsea Hospital for Women , whose buildings are to be opened this year , the foundation stone having been laid by the Princess of Wales in 1 SS 0 .

Bro . Viscount Holmesdale , P . G . M . Kent , was at the consecration , at Marden , near Staplehurst , on Tuesday , of an addition to the parish churchyard . The ceremony was peiformed by the diocesan , the Archbishop of Canterbury , who has been staying at the vicarage for a few days . The vicar , the Rev . VV . Beacham , was a National Schoolmaster of the parish in which Dr . Tait resided , and his wife was governess to the Misses Tait .

In summer , fresh air should be obtained , if possible , from the shaded side of the building . To effect this there should be a number of apertures covered with some porous texture ( so that , as we have before noticed , the air may have no sensible current ) , extending at intervals over a considerable space . When the windows happen to be at the shaded sides , the ventilation will be easily

managed , by letting in the air at the lower part of them , by no means opening the top . In fine , the ^ e golden rules may be laid down , which have been approved by a celebrated civil engineer and a great authority on ventilation , that in whatever manner fresh air is obtained ( 1 ) , it should be introduced near the floor ; ( 2 ) at various places ; ( 3 ) dispersed as much as possible to avoid currents . —From Casse / l's Household Guide for June .

ceremony of installation which was admirably performed by the outgoing VV . M . Bro . G . Dayrell Reed , was somewhat curtailed , and after closing the lodge the brethren entertained their guests with their usual hospitality at the Freemasons' Tavern . The VV . M ., Bro . Dr . Masterman is a candidate for the City Remembrancersbip .

Bro . H . Wildey Wright ( Temple ) spoke at an open-air meeting at Canonbury last week , in connection with a local political club .

The sixth exhibition of the Yorkshire Fine Art Society , consisting of a fine collection of upwards of 1000 oil and water-colour paintings , was opened at Leeds on Monday . The founders and first officers of the Gallery

Lodge are being photographed by Messrs . C . F . Treble and Co ., 371 , Brixton-road , for presentation as a group to the lodge . It is intended , if possible , to have a similar group of the Consecrating Officers and other Grand Officers present at the consecration of the lodge .

The vote of congratulation lo Prince Leopold passed by the City of Westminster Lodge at their last regular meeting ( the day of the marriage ) , having been illuminated and inscribed upon vellum , and forwarded to H . H . the Duke of Albany , Prince Leopold , was visited on Whit Monday at Ciaremont by their Royal Highnesses the Duke and Duchess of Edinburgh .

The Prince of Wales , M . W . G . M ., dined at the Earl of Albemarle ' s house on Monday evening , in Doverstreet , and met the officers of the ist Life Guards , the occasion being the anniversary dinner of this fine regiment . Bro . Alderman Knight is Chairman of the Directors of the Scottish Pilsen and Joel Electric Light Company .

Bro . Sir Michael Hicks-Beach , Bart ., M . P ., P . G . M . Gloucestershire , attended the meeting of the Reformatory and Industrial Schools Commission at Old Palace Yard , on Wednesday of last week . Bro . Sir Thomas Brassey , M . P ., presided at the anniversary festival of the Printers' Pension Corporation Society , which was held at Freemasons' Tavern . Great

Queen-street , on Wednesday evening last . The needs of the corporation , it is stated , increase rapidly , and at the recent election of pensioners only eighteen out of a list of sixty-five applicants could be elected , while of the unsuccessful applicants sixteen were above seventy years of age , and the cases of all were urgent and deserving . In proposing " The Health of the Queen , " the chairman remarked

upon the fact that Her Majesty was herself an author , and that she had caused to be written by one of the most distinguished literary men of our time the very interesting life of the late Prince Consort . Alter giving the toast of " The Lord Mayor and the Sheriffs of London , " to which Bro . Alderman and Sheriff Hanson , who was called upon as Sir Reginald Hanson , responded , the chairman proposed

the toast of the evening , "Continued Prosperity to the Printers' Pension Almshouse and Orphan Asylum Corporation , " and alluded to the extraordinary popularity which had attended the publication of the writings of Lady Brassey , The book had been translated into most modern languages ; it had been read by millions , and had been purchased by hundreds of thousands of copies . He spoke at some length

of the affairs of the charity , expressing his regret to learn that the income had fallen short by £ 500 of the sum required for the pension fund , which should amount to £ 1800 . 'The secretary , Mr . J . S . Hodson , read a list of subscriptions and donations , which , including £ 100 from the chairman , amounted to nearly £ 700 . " The Health of the Chairman " was proposed by Bro . Alderman and Sheriff Hanson , and other toasts followed .

An influential county meeting was held at Truro on Thursday , under the p residency of Mr . Tremayne , to promote the representation of Cornwall at the forthcoming International Fisheries Exhibition . Mr . Pendarves Vivian , M . P ., and Mr . C . C . Ross , M . P ., were

among those present . It was resolved to form a central Committee , and to raise a fund to enable the local fishermen to forward exhibits , and to contribute to the general fund . Models of the gear used in the Cornish fisheries are to be prepared forth ivith , the fishermen being assisted to attend the Exhibition .

Bro . George Cole was installed W . M . of the Crystal Palace Lodge on Thursday , the ist inst ., and Bro . VV . Land , P . M . and Secretary , was presented with a testimonial . We hope to give a report of the proceedings in our next .

H . R . H . the Prince of Wales , M . W . G . M ., on Thursday last inspected at Great Yarmouth the Artillery Militia , under the command of Bro . Colonel Lord Suffield , K . C . B ., Provincial Grand Master Norfolk . The Prince was accompanied by a large staff of officers . Thousands

of persons were present at the review , at the close of which the Prince , addressing Bro . Lord Suffield and the ofiicers and men , expressed his pleasure at being there , and his satisfaction with their movements . He afterwards lunched with the officers at the Assembly Rooms .

The needs of the corporation , it is stated , increase rapidly , and at the recent election of pensioners only eighteen out of a list of sixty-five applicants could be elected , while of the unsuccessful applicants sixteen were above seventy years of age , and the cases of all were urgent and deserving . In proposing " The Health of the Queen , " the chairman remarked

upon the fact that Her Majesty was herself an author , and that she had caused to be written by one of the most distinguished literary men of our time the very interesting life of the late Prince Consort . Alter giving the toast of " The Lord Mayor and the Sheriffs of London , " to which Bro . Alderman and Sheriff Hanson , who was called upon as Sir Reginald Hanson , responded , the chairman proposed

the toast of the evening , "Continued Prosperity to the Printers' Pension Almshouse and Orphan Asylum Corporation , " and alluded to the extraordinary popularity which had attended the publication of the writings of Lady Brassey , The book had been translated into most modern languages ; it had been read by millions , and had been purchased by hundreds of thousands of copies . He spoke at some length

of the affairs of the charity , expressing his regret to learn that the income had fallen short by £ 500 of the sum required for the pension fund , which should amount to £ 1800 . 'The secretary , Mr . J . S . Hodson , read a list of subscriptions and donations , which , including £ 100 from the chairman , amounted to nearly £ 700 . " The Health of the Chairman " was proposed by Bro . Alderman and Sheriff Hanson , and other toasts followed .

An influential county meeting was held at Truro on Thursday , under the p residency of Mr . Tremayne , to promote the representation of Cornwall at the forthcoming International Fisheries Exhibition . Mr . Pendarves Vivian , M . P ., and Mr . C . C . Ross , M . P ., were

among those present . It was resolved to form a central Committee , and to raise a fund to enable the local fishermen to forward exhibits , and to contribute to the general fund . Models of the gear used in the Cornish fisheries are to be prepared forth ivith , the fishermen being assisted to attend the Exhibition .

H . R . H . the Prince of Wales , M . W . G . M ., on Thursday last inspected at Great Yarmouth the Artillery Militia , under the command of Bro . Colonel Lord Suffield , K . C . B ., Provincial Grand Master Norfolk . The Prince was accompanied by a large staff of officers . Thousands

of persons were present at the review , at the close of which the Prince , addressing Bro . Lord Suffield and the ofiicers and men , expressed his pleasure at being there , and his satisfaction with their movements . He afterwards lunched with the officers at the Assembly Rooms .
