CONCORD CONCLAVE AND MOUNT HOREB SANOTUARY , JERSEY .

The Grand Recorder , Sir Knight C . F . Matier , accompanied by four other members of the Imperial Council , arrived in Jersey on the morning of the 19 th ult ., and paid an official visit to this conclave in the

evening . They were accompanied b y the Intendant-General of Jersey , Colonel Malet de Carteret , and by Sir Knight Captain Le Seelleur , P . G . S . B ., and were received in due form by the members of the conclave . After the proceedings in the temple , the sir kni ghts adjourned to Sir Knight Bree ' s Hotel , where a splendid banquet had been prepared , and to which ample justice was done .

Some excellent speeches followed , more particularl y that given by Colonel MALET DE CARTERET in proposing the toast of " Our Distinguished Visitors , " to which a most happy and felicitous reply was given by Sir Kni ght C . F . MATIER . To Sir Knight Bois was confided the loyal toasts . Sir Knight HA . MI . ING , in responding to the toast of

"The Officers of the Conclave , " gave a most interesting res / inn * of the history of the Concord Conclave . We congratulate the conclave in possessing Sir Knight HamlingasitsRecoider ; a more able , energetic , enthusiastic , or conscientious Masonic brother does not exist in Jersey .

Sir KnightSricKLANU , who represented theGuernsey Conclave , returned thanks for the generous hospitality lie had received , and regretted the absence of the Intendant General of Guernsey , who he was sure was with them in the spirit though unavoidably absent in person , and of whose apologies for his absence he was the bearer .

Sir Kni ghts Capt . Barette and Oldridge , who acted as Stewards , carried ou : their onerous duties to the complete satisfaction of all concerned . I'he representative members of Council and Senate proceeded to Guernsey on Tuesday morning , the 23 rd ' It ., and we learn met with an enthusiastic reception . \ Ve venture to hope that the ladies who accomDanied

A MASONIC JUBILEE .

A Masonic anniversary of probably unique significance was celebrated in Bristol on Thursday , the iSth ult . On May 18 th , 18 43 , a candidate was initiated in the Moira Lodge of Honour , who had been a member of it during the whole of the 50 years which have since elapsed , and having attained to the highest

position in the lodge , has filled many distinguished positions , and is now Provincial Grand Master of Bristol . Bro . W . A . F . Powell is universally respected throughout the province , and he will be warmly congratulated by the Craft generally upon the attainment of his Masonic jubilee ; indeed his fellow citizens generally can sympathise with the rejoicings of his

brethren on the occasion . It was contrary to his wish that any great demonstration should be made in connection with the event , but he consented to attend a special meeting of his mother lodge at the Freemasons' Hall , Park-street , when additional interest was given to the occasion by the presence of Bro . Hugh Owen , who 53 vears ago became a member of the

lodge , and who at 85 years of age journeyed from London to do honour to his old friend and associate . The W . M ., Bro . It was bound in blue morocco , ornamented with gold , and lined with very rich shot silk . Each page was surrounded with emblematic borders , and the back of each leaf was adorned with Masonic emblems , such as the badge of a P . G . M . and the like . by Bro . T . Protheroe , of Bro . Powell , with his arms and the city arms . The presentation having been made , Bro . HUGH OWEN , as the father of Masonry in Bristol , congratulated the P . G . M ., not only upon the position in which the Prince had worthily placed him , but also upon ' attaining his jubilee . In a very graceful speech , he

said they were very young together , but as he was a few years the elder he entered Masonry first ; in fact he , had been 53 years a Mason . He well remembered the meeting at which their P . G . M . was a candidate , introduced by his honoured- father , than whom a more worthy brother never entered a Masonic lodge . His son had held the highest offices in the province , and

won the confidence of the highest , the noblest , the humblest , and the simplest of brethren . Bro . J NORTHAM , the newly-installed W . M . of No . 2257 , conveyed the congratulations of the lodge which was permitted to bear the honoured name of Powell , and Bro . W . E . VOWLES , P . P . J . G . W ., as a Bristol Mason

of 35 years standing , added his felicitations . The PROV . GRAND MASTER , who was received with enthusiastic applause , rose to reply , and said he could not adequately express his thanks for the honour done him by his mother lodge . So long as he lived the beautiful address they had presented to him would be among his most precious Masonic treasures . Bro .

Owen had referred to 50 years ago , and very tew could expect to see the 50 th anniversary of their initiation . But to be a subscribing member to a lodge for 50 years , to have become its W . M ., to have held various offices , and at the end of the time to be Grand Master of the province was , he believed , absolutel y unique . He could say he had never sought any office , but he could

claim one merit for himself , a good feeling for the Craft , a desire to uphold it , to maintain its character , and to do all in his power to help a brother Mason . He was unable now to be as active as he had been in years gone by . In fact had he known the illnesses he should have to undergo he would not have accepted his

present position . In conclusion , he wished the W . M . and brethren of every lodge in the province that prosperity , goodwill , and harmony , which Masons ought to possess and had done in a peculiar degree in the Province of Bristol during the whole time he had known it . The proceedings were shortly afterwards brought to a close .

The Late W. Bro. H. J. Whymper, C.I.E., Deputy District Grand Master Of The Punjab.

THE LATE W . BRO . H . J . WHYMPER , C . I . E ., DEPUTY DISTRICT GRAND MASTER OF THE PUNJAB .

We have a melancholy pleasure in giving prominence to this the first communication from India , other than b y cable , respecting the decease of the lamented Bro . Whymper . Bro . Capt . Leslie is the W . M . of the Stewart Lodge , and was a close Masonic friend of the Deputy District Grand Master now , alas . ' no more .

It will be with feelings of the deepest sorrow and regret that the death of W . Bro . H . J . Whymper is heard of , not only in his own district and lodge , but over the whole Masonic world , for it is not too much to say that his collection of works on Freemasonry , and his vast knowledge of its literature , are known to all true lovers of the Masonic art .

He had gone to Bombay to see an old friend off to England , and it was there that he was taken ill . On the 19 th April he was admitted to the European General Hospital , where he rapidly sank , and died on the 27 th , of dysentery and fever . He was initiated in Mayo Lodge , No . 1413 , at Rawal Pindi , on December the 17 th , 1872 , took the R . A .

Degree in the Rose of Denmark Chapter , No . 975 , and in due course became a member of the 32 , a Kni ght Templar , and a Knight of Malta . He w-is a member of the Inner Circle of the Quatuor Coronati Lodge , No . 2076 , and at the time of his death was Deputy District Grand Master of the Punjab . To his Lodge—Stewart , No . i 960—of which he was

a founder , his loss is irreparable , and in the District of the Punjab he will leave a gap which it will not be possible to fill . Well versed in all branches of Masonic literature , a staunch and generous supporter of all the Masonic and social undertakings of his lodge , ever ready to help and advise , to assist and instruct ; his genial face will be missed , his kindly words and actions ever remembered by all Freemasons in the Punjab , but

by none more than his sorrowing brethren of the Stewart Lodge . I enclose a circular indicative of the desire of No . i 960 , to honour the memory of our beloved friend and brother , which , kindly publish with this communication , and much oblige , J . H .
