CONSECRATION OF THE GEORGE GRAVELEY MARK LODGE . No . 461 .

A new Mark lodge for the Province of East Anglia was consecrated on the 25 th ult ., at the Masonic Hall , Leytonstone , Essex , by Bro . C . F . Matier . P . G . W ., Grand Secretary , and was assisted in his important work by Bros . George Cooper , P . G . Ov ., as S . W . ; Chas . H . Driver , P . G . Ov ., as J . W . i Rev . A . W . Oxford , G . Chap ., as Chap . ; C . W . Carreli , P . G . Stwd ., as D . C . ; and Jabez Church , P . G . Ov ., as I . G .

Previous to the consecration of the lodge a Mark lodge was held by special dispensation for the purpose of advancing certain Craft brethren , Bro . George Graveley presiding . Assisted b y Bros . Shurmur , Holland , E . M . Money , and others , he advanced several brethren .

Bro . MATIER , in opening the consecration proceedings , said the brethren met that evening for a very interesting purpose , and one which could not fail to make a lasting impression on the minds of those who took part in the ceremony , whether as Consecrating Officers , as founders of the

new lodge , or as spectators . The purpose was no less an one than that of consecrating a new lodge for the Province of East Anglia , which he trusted would be a lasting ornament to the province , for the benefit of thc Order at large , and for the best advantage to the members of the lodge .

Bro . OXFORD having offered prayer , the usual forms were observed , and he then gave the oration . At the conclusion of the consecration ceremony , Bro . Geo . Graveley was installed as Worshipful Master of the lodge , by Bro . Matier , and the following brethren were appointed to fill the other offices : Bro . James Hall Brown , Prov . G . D . C . Middx ., Acting I . P . M . ; William Shurmur , S . W . ; J .

Holland , J . W . ; Arthur G . Duck , M . O . ; Michael Christian , S . O . ; Charles Mac Colla , J . O . ; Chas . G . C . Dunbar , D . The complimentary votes were afterwards passed to the Consecrating Officers , and other formal business having been transacted , the lodge was closed , and the brethren adjourned to an exquisite banquet provided b y Bro . Hall Brown , proprietor of the Red Lion and Masonic Hall .

During dinner Bro . Harry Tipper , P . G . Stwd ., P . P . G . D . Middx . and Surrey , P . M . 315 , 385 , & c , assisted b y the Royal Criterion Hand Bell Ringers , gave some beautiful selections on the hand-bells . After dinner . Bro . TiDDer . Madame Malenoir . Miss Klorenrn . Tinner .

Kro . F . J . Britten , Mr . H . Ryall , Mr . H . G . Ryall , and the Royal Criterion Quartette , sang some charming pieces . The usual toasts were honoured , Bro . GEORGE COOPER replying for " The Pro Grand Master , Sec . "

Bro . HARVEY , Prov . G . Sec . of East Anglia , acknowledged thc toast of " The Provincial Grand Master , Lord Henniker . " Bro . MATIER proposed the toast of " The Worshi pful Master of the George Graveley Lodge , No . 461 , " There was no toast that could possibly bc proposed that evening which could be more important than the health of

"c vvorshipful Master , who had been installed to rule over the brethren , ^ onsequently , no toast ought to meet with a heartier or more cordial rccepion than " Prosperity to the George Graveley Lodge . " In asking the rcthren to drink that toast , he was asking them to drink the health of a rother who had filled the office of Master of the Beaconsfield Lodee , of

"e lemperance-in-the-East Lodge , and of the Old Kent Lodge , and who ^ d now completed his quadrilateral service b y becoming Master of the eorrr Graveley Lodge . If it was important for a brother to be installed s Worshi pful Master for the first time , how much more important was it \ v u brother t 0 be installed as first Master of a lodge , and more especiall y , c that lodge bore his own name .

» he toast having been drunk with the greatest enthusiasm , p Ihe WORSHIPFUL MASTER said , in response , if there was a Degree in had niaSOnry that he WaS f ° ° f morc t , lan anotner ¦ ' t ,, e Mark . He a endeavoured in his short Masonic career of 18 years to find what there s » i the various Degrees , and he must say tha . t among the various De-Ccs the Mark , if properly carried out , was the most interesting . regard to his name , he stood there a very humble representative of a glorious name , which floated 1130 years ago in the county of Herts , when Edward the Confessor gave the name of his ( Bro . Graveley ' s ) predecessor ' s name to a borough in that county . He did hope that his officers would endeavour to do their duty . He would not like to see that lodge which bore his name starve for want of new blood and new energy . While he was in the chair

he should endeavour to do what he could to work out the ritual in the proper way . He wished to be a severe Master to them all ; but , at the same time , he wanted to be a loving Master . No man was a good Master unless he knew how to control the brethren . If he could not control them the sooner he resigned the chair the better . He wanted to love them all , and to be

loved in return . He wished to say that he thanked various brethren for presents they had made to the lodge . Bro . Shurmur had presented the whole of the books , and Bro . Holland had presented the pedestals and wicket and other things . At the next meeting he should propose a vote of thanks to be recorded on the minutes to these brethren . He now proposed "The Health of the Consecrating Officers , " thanking them for their

servtces . Bro . MATIER , G . S ., in reply said the thanks were not proposed to himself in propria persona alone , but simply as the occupant of the office of Consecrating Officer . It had given him great pleasure to consecrate that lodge , because it bore the honoured name of one who for many years had been one of his most strenuous supporters in Freemasonry and of the Mark Degree , one who had made his mark in the Charities , and in the Mark

Benevolent Fund in particular . Secondly , he was glad to do anything for Lord Henniker . He was most happy to be called upon to perform the ceremony , and he had done it to the best of his ability . But how could he have done it as he had done if he had not been so ably assisted by other distinguished brethren . He thanked the brethren for their kind appreciation of his efforts , and he wished the lodge every success and prosperity for years and years to come .

Bros , the Ven . Dr . DUNBAR , J . BRANDRETH GIBBS , WRIGHT , and other brethren responded to the toast of " The Advancees , " and Bros . E . M . MONEY and Major CARRELI . replied to that of " The Visitors , " Bro : Major CARRELL stating that Mark Masonry was now making such strides in the Eastern part of London that he believed the time was fast approaching when Essex would be separated from thc Province of East Anglia , and have a province of its own .

Bro . GEORGE WARD VERRY responded to thc toast ol "Thc Mark Benevolent Fund , " which the W . M . had said in proposing it that lodge could not be expected to support in ¦ this its first year , but in a year or two it was hoped they would be able to send up a Steward to it . Bro . VV . SHURMUR , S . W ., replied to the toast of " The Officers , " and

expressed his firm conviction that the lodge , which had been so well started , and had such an excellent first Master , and such promising officers , would go from strength to strength , and become the leading Mark lodge in the province . No efforts of his would be spared to lead the lodge to a successful issue , and in the matter of working or in the Charities an example would be set to all other lodges .

Bro . GEORGE SHEARMAN gave the Tyler ' s toast ere thc brethren separated . The Masonic career of Bro . George Graveley , the first Worshipful Master of the newest Mark Lodge , which we now give , may prove interesting to our readers :

? Fanaticism is one of those peculiar outbreaks of ill-regulated minds which seems periodically to affect humanity . It has marked human nature curiously enough from the first , and has even disgraced religion . Of course , to some religion itself is fanaticism ; but we are speaking of that hopeless and excited and intolerant spirit which denies to another the right of private judgment , which

sees nothing good in any who happen religiously or politically to differ from it , and which bans , instead of blessing , and hinders , instead of advancing , the progress of religious toleration and of the liberty of belief . Freemasonry has suffered much from fanaticism and lanatics in past times and at the present hour , but knows nothing of it itself , disavows it , and condemns it . Freemasonry avows

toleration for all , and wishes ever to lay down the great , though sometimes forgotten truth , that the world is wide enough for all religious bodies , and that instead of fighting with one another , and cursing one another , they had better join in one common crusade against evil , ignorance , suffering , sorrow , want , and wretchedness , lying like Lazarus at their very doors . —Kenning ' s Cyclopccdia of Freemasonry .

toleration for all , and wishes ever to lay down the great , though sometimes forgotten truth , that the world is wide enough for all religious bodies , and that instead of fighting with one another , and cursing one another , they had better join in one common crusade against evil , ignorance , suffering , sorrow , want , and wretchedness , lying like Lazarus at their very doors . —Kenning ' s Cyclopccdia of Freemasonry .
