Free was next interrogated and entrusted , and lodge being advanced , the ceremony of passing was worked , Bro . Free being the candidate , and the ceremony was very carefully rendered . Lodge was resumed , and Bro . Ford was elected W . M . for the ensuing lodge meeting ,

and , after some formal business had been transacted , the lodge was closed . ¦ _ Subsequently , in the same room , ' a capital meeting of the Masonic Benevolent Association was held . Bro . Moss , Hon . Sec , submitted the minutes of the last monthly meeting and a statement of accounts . A ballot was declared , and it resulted in favour of Bro . Mosquito . We are glad to observe the continuing success of this young Association , whose progress we have noted from the commencement of its career .

DUKE OF EDINBURGH LODGE ( No . 1259 ) . —A regular meeting of the above lodge was held on the 26 th ult ., at the Bricklayers' Arms Tavern , Narrowstreet , Limehouse , which is situate only a few minutes ' walk from Stepney Station . A good muster was obtained , and a capital evening ' s work was got through . Present : Bros . Wakefield , W . M . ; Ellingford , S . W ., Thomas ,

J . W . ; Atkins , P . M ., Preceptor ; Buchan , P . AL , Hon . Sec , acting as S . D . ; Rolfe , I . G . ; Geeves , Dixon , J . Taylor , Stephens , and others . After due formalities , Bro . Rolfe was ' questioned , and lodge was advanced . The ceremony of passing was carefully worked , Bro . Rolfe being candidate . Lodge was

closed in the Second Degree , and , on proposition duly seconded , Bro . Stephens was elected a member of the lodge . Bro . Ellingford was elected W . M . for the ensuing Friday ' s meeting , and after some discussion , in which it was decided to continue the meetings of the lodge some time longer , the lodge was closed solemnly and adjourned .

CLAPTON LODGE ( No . 1365 ) . —A meeting of this lodge of instruction was held on Friday , the 20 th ult ., at the Lord Stanley , Sandringham-road , Dalston , when there were present Bros . Baker , VV . M . ; Honychurch , S . VV . ; Butler , J . W . ; Cusworth , Preceptor ; C Diamond , Hon . Sec ; Stoddart , J . D . ; Harris , I . G . ; Moiling , Finch , Church , Harling , and others .

After lodge was opened , and minutes read and confirmed , the ceremony of initiation was worked , Bro . Harling being candidate . Bros . Harling , 13 G 5 , and Harris , 12 O 0 , were unanimously elected members of the lodge . A vote of thanks was passed for the duties performed in the chair for the first time , and Bro . Honychurch was elected VV . M . for the next meeting , and lodge was closed .

The ceremony of installation was then proceeded with , and the brethren below the chair having retired , Bro . Truman was installed in the chair b y Bro . Hatherley , in his usual impressive manner . 'The brethren having returned , saluted the W . M . according to custom , to whom the working tools were presented and explained by Bro .

Hatherley , in a manr . er well worthy 01 an expert Mason , and demonstrating great learning and good elocution . The addresses to the Wardens and brethren being given , the VV . The lodge was closed in due form at S'lj p . m ., and the brethren retired to partake of an excellent banquet , provided by Bro . Simpson , the hall Steward , after which the usual loyal and patriotic toasts were duly given and honoured .

CARLISLE . —Cumberland Lodge ( No . 60 ) . — The installation meeting of the W . M . of this lodge was held at the Masonic Hall , Fisher-street , on Friday , the 19 th ult . The VV . M . elect , Bro . Banks , of Maryport , having been present , was duly installed by Bro . Diggle , P . M ., P . G . I . G . England , in an able and efficient manner .

A new feature at t ! ie banquet table was Ihe offering of the brethren towards the funds of the Jamaica Masonic Benevolence Association , when a sum of money was collected and paid over to the Treasurer of the association to be applied in acts of charity .

SPANISH TOWN . —Hamilton Lodge ( No . 1440 ) . —This lodge , held its installation meeting at the lodge rooms , on the 4 th ult . VV . Bro . John Ihunvell , P . M ., of the Royal Lodge , Kingston , performed the ceremony of installing the Master . Among the Past Masters present were VV . Bros . F .. X . Leon , Barnet Staines , S . H . Watson , C . Knox , and VV . G . Macfarlane . The ceremony

being over , the brethren adjourned to the banquet room , where they \ vere entertained at a special banquet , the proceedings lasting until a late hour . 'The Kingston lodges were represented as well as several of the country ones . The banquet broke up after the toast to " The Success of the Masonic Benevolence , " and a pretty good sum was collected around the table in furtherance of this worthy

PORT ELIZABETH . — Good Hope Lodge ( No . S 63 ) . —The Masonic Temple of Port Elizabeth was on 'Thursday , April 27 th , attended by an unusually large number of the B . B ., fully a hundred from various parts being present . The occasion was the installation of Bro . A . C . Wylde ( C . C . and R . M . ) , as Worshipful Master for the ensuing Masonic year of the above lodge , and in addition to the officers and others of the Good Will and

Southern Cross ( Uitenhage ) Lodges , Bro . VV . Wedderburn , P . M ., of Grahamstown , and many others made homage to the worthy and accepted Master elect . The installing officer was the District Grand Senior Warden , Bro . C . VV . Mouat , P . M ., and he was assisted by Past Masters Wheelwright , Smyth , Blakeway , Dickinson , James Kemsley , Wedderburn , J . W . C . Mackay , S . White , and others . Before proceeding with the business of the evening , the

D . G . S . W . said he had been requested by the members of the Lodge of Good Hope to invest Bro . Mackay , P . M ., with a jewel in recognition of his services in the years 1 S 79-80 , and he had much pleasure in doingso , bearing his own testimony to the appropriateness of the presentation . The recipient , who evidently had not anticipated this , replied in a few well chosen words , and the ordinary business of the meeting was proceeded with .

The various offices were filled by Bros . P . M . 's James Kemsley , S . W . ; Wheelwright , J . VV . ; White , I . G . After prayer by Bro . the Rev . Dr . VVirgman , Bro . Alfred Carrington Wylde was , in a most impressive manner , installed as VV . M ., and he then proceeded to invest his officers for the year as follows : Bros . C Dickenson , I . P . M . ; E . Cohn , S . VV . ; Rev . A . Grant , J . W . and Chaplain ; C . T . Wheelwright , P . M ., Treas . ; E . R . Smyth , P . M ., Sec ;

A . VV . Kowsell . S . D . ; H . Light , j . D . ; E . H . Gunning , I . G . ; J . Bredell , Org . ; and VV . Henderson , Tyler . Due honour having been paid to the VV . M . elected , the brethren were invited to attend a banquet given by the brethren of the lodge , in the Liedertafel Hall , which had been kindly lent for the occasion . _ Here a most sumptuous repast was provided , the chair being taken by Bro . A . C , Wylde , his two principal officers acting as croupiers .

Alter ample time had been allowed in the Junior Warden ' s department , the Chairman proposed first " The Oueen and Craft , " and next "H . R . H . the Prince of Wales , M . W . G . M ., " at the same time expatiating upon the beneficial intluence exercised by Royalty in upholding the dignity of the ancient Craft , when supported by such worthy brethren as the members of the English Royal Family . "The Health of the D . G . M ., Bro . Egan , " was heartily

received , and his regret at not being able to attend was shared by all present . The toast of " The W . M . of the Lodge of Good Hope " was happily given by Bro . Mouat , and responded to by Bro . Wylde , who expressed his warm attachment to the principles of Freemasonry , and his heartfelt desire to advance the Order here during his term of office . He then in turn proposed " The Health of Bro . C . T . VV .

Mouat , the Installing Officer , " and bore testimony to the many obligations the lodges were under to him . In a speech of some length and much eloquence the D . G . S . W . responded . He exhorted his hearers to a more active interest in Masonry , and the study of grand truths underlying it , and gave his own case as one in proof of the distinction one can arise to in the Craft , provided honest application and study be brought to bear .

Ihe other toasts proposed and responded to were : "The Newly-Installed Ofiicers , " " The Immediate Past Masters , " "The Retiring Officers , " "The VV . M . of the Good Will Lodge , " "The Southern Cross Lodge , " "The Visiting Brethren , " "The Past Masters , " "Sweethearts and Wives , " "The Banquet Committee , " and the Tyler's . The National Anthem was sung , which brought the proceedings to a close . During dinner , and the intervals between the speeches ,

Ihe jewel presented to Bro . Mackay is a handsome gold and inlaid Past Master ' s , and bears the followfn" inscription : " Presented to Bro . J . W . C . Mackay , P . M ., by the members of the Good Hope Lodge , No . SO 3 , Port Elizabeth , South Africa , as a token of esteem on his retirement from the office of Worshipful Master , 1 S 79-S 0 . "

BRO . J . J . NEW . On Monday , the 22 nd ult ., was interred at the Holy-rood Churchyard , Swindon , the remains of the late Bro . j . J . New , of Swindon , who died on the iSth ult ., aged fortyseven . He had for many years past been a most useful member of the Craft , taking great delight in teaching the work which he so well understoodand ' was always read

, y to give a helping hand to the brethren in working up the ceremony , and at the lodge of instruction . He joined the Craft , at Swindon , in 1 S 55 , but business calling him into Cheshire , he resided for some years in Birkenhead , and became VV . M . of the Mersey Lodge , 477 , which office he held two years in succession , being also appointed to Provincial honours in Cheshire , and was a P . P . G . A . D . C . and

, P . Z . of Chapter 477 . Again , returningto Swindon , Bro . New became VV . M . of the Gooch Lodge , 1295 , and also held the same Provincial honoursin the Craft in Wilts as in Cheshire viz ., P . P . G . A . D . C , and was P . Z . of Chapter 355 , and P . P . G . Soj . Wilts . Southern Cross ( Uitenhage ) Lodges , Bro . VV . Wedderburn , P . M ., of Grahamstown , and many others made homage to the worthy and accepted Master elect . The installing officer was the District Grand Senior Warden , Bro . C . VV . Mouat , P . M ., and he was assisted by Past Masters Wheelwright , Smyth , Blakeway , Dickinson , James Kemsley , Wedderburn , J . W . C . Mackay , S . White , and others . Before proceeding with the business of the evening , the

D . G . S . W . said he had been requested by the members of the Lodge of Good Hope to invest Bro . Mackay , P . M ., " at the same time expatiating upon the beneficial intluence exercised by Royalty in upholding the dignity of the ancient Craft , when supported by such worthy brethren as the members of the English Royal Family . "The Health of the D . G . M ., Bro . Egan , " was heartily

received , and his regret at not being able to attend was shared by all present . The toast of " The W . M . of the Lodge of Good Hope " was happily given by Bro . Mouat , and responded to by Bro . Wylde , who expressed his warm attachment to the principles of Freemasonry , and his heartfelt desire to advance the Order here during his term of office . He then in turn proposed " The Health of Bro . C . T . VV .

Mouat , the Installing Officer , " and bore testimony to the many obligations the lodges were under to him . In a speech of some length and much eloquence the D . G . S . W . responded . He exhorted his hearers to a more active interest in Masonry , and the study of grand truths underlying it , and gave his own case as one in proof of the distinction one can arise to in the Craft , provided honest application and study be brought to bear .

Ihe other toasts proposed and responded to were : "The Newly-Installed Ofiicers , " " The Immediate Past Masters , " "The Retiring Officers , " "The VV . New , of Swindon , who died on the iSth ult ., aged fortyseven . He had for many years past been a most useful member of the Craft , taking great delight in teaching the work which he so well understoodand ' was always read
