The Freemason , SATURDAY , MAY " 9 , 1874 .
The Initiation Of H.R.H. Prince Leopold.
THE INITIATION OF H . R . H . PRINCE LEOPOLD .
We beg to congratulate the Order on the reception amongst our ancient Brotherhood of another member of our Royal Family .
H . R . H . Prince Leopold was initiated on May ist at an emergency meeting of the Apollo University Lodge , Oxford , by the W . M ., F . Morrell .
Following so close on the initiation of H . R . H . Prince Arthur , the fact cannot fail to be most gratifying to the Craft . Mr . Collins , private secretary to our Royal
brother , was initiated on the same occasion , and the meeting of that famous lodge was one long to be remembered by all present at the interesting ceremony .
The New Grand Officers.
THE NEW GRAND OFFICERS .
I he annual appointment of Grand Ofiicers is always a matter of much interest to the Craft . Applicants are many , the offices are few , and naturally there are always a good many excellent
brethren , who think , that , they might have been elevated to grand honours . Of course , there are always a great many brethren whom nobody thinks at nil suitable for
such high office , but themselves , and though that class abounds amongst us , it is not with those who compose it , that , the real difficulty of selection lies .
But it is when , amid a great many of equal claims , and equal merit , the preference has to be decided , and the choice has to be made between two given brethren .
Now under the present happy government of our Order , and the well-known impartiality and equable rule of our very excellent Grand Master , we are all well aware , that , the greatest
attention is paid to the claims of all , and the selection of Grand Officers is made on grounds of approved Masonic merit . It ought to be a matter of rejoicing to us all ,
that , never was our executive more admirably filled than now , or greater readiness evinced to afford information , or greater courtesy exhibited , as we can personally testify , to either applicants
for advice , or as the French say " renseignements macconniques . " We congratulate the Craft for more than one reason on the appointment of the Grand Officers for the present year .
The first is , that , the great majority of the appointments are good hard-working Masons ; another is , that , the provinces are so largely represented ; and the third is , the number of
new Grand Officers , who have rendered much and effective aid to our charities . The Senior Grand Warden , Lord Henry Thymic , M . I ' ., was initiated in No . 973 , Royal
Somerset , in 106 3 , and is the present W . M ., of Lodge 1478 , Warminster . Bro . Okeover , of Okeover , Ashbourne , was
initiated in Lodge 852 , St . Oswald , in i 860 , and is now D . P . G . M . for Derbyshire . Wc do not find the name of our noble brother ,
The New Grand Officers.
the Grand Senior AVarden in any of the lists of the charities , but we have no doubt , that , before his year of office has expired , he will have duly qualified himself .
Bro . Okeover is a Life Governor of the Boys School . Bro . J . Simpson , D . C . L ., the Grand Chaplain , has Ions' been well-known as an active and
energetic Mason of the province of Cumberland and Westmoreland , and is also a Life Governor of the Boys' School . He was initiated in No . 129 , Union Kendal , in 186 . 5 , anc ' filled various
Craft and Provincial offices . The two Senior Grand Deacons are both wellknown and active Masons , and have equally served the Craft in high positions , Bro . Rucker
as V . P . of the Board of General Purposes , and Bro . Leith as , D . D . G . M . of Bombay . Bio . Rucker was initiated in No . 66 , Grenadiers , in 186 5 , and having fulfilled his lodge offices , was
subsequently Grand Steward . He is a Vice-President of the three Masonic Charities . Bro . J . Percy Leith was initiated in the Antiquity , No . 2 , in 1 S 65 , and is a P . M . ofthe same ,-
and of 549 , 1118 , and 1359 , has been a G . S ., and is A ice-President of the Girls' School , and is Life Governor of the Boys' School . He has served each as Steward three times .
The two Junior Grand Deacons are equally well-known in the Masonic world . Bro . J . C . Parkinson was initiated into Freemasonry in 1858 , in the Universal Lodge , No .
18 r , Freemasons' Hall , London , of which lodge he is now the Senior Past Master and "Father , " having passed the chair in 1862-3 , after uniting in the years i 860 and 1861 respectively , offices
rarely held m conjunction , namely Junior and Senior AVarden and Secretary . Thc centenary jewel was granted to the Universal Lodge on its
one hundredth anniversary in 1868 , and it is now a Vice-Patron of the Boys' and Girls ' Schools .
Bro . Parkinson is a Past Master of the Bard of Avon Lodge , he being the first W . M of that lodge after its transfer from Stratford
upon-Avon to Middlesex , on its resuscitation , after the Stratford brethren had passed a resolution to resign their warrant into the hands of the Grand Secretary .
Bro . Parkinson is a member of the Prince of AVales Lodge , No . 259 , and W . M . of the St . David ' s Lodge , Aberdare , Glamorganshire , besides being Deputy Provincial Grand Master for
Middlesex , a Member of the Board of General Purposes , and a Vice-Patron of the three Masonic Charities . The office of Vice-Patron owes its origin to Bro . Parkinson , who ,
observing that the positijn of Vice-President attracted many brethren , and that no further rank awaited donors of more than $ 0 guineas , brought forward and carried an independent
motion , in 1871 , creating Vice-Patrons of the Charities , and entitling every donor of 100 guineas to that rank . The result has been a large pecuniary gain to all three Institutions . On the
protracted illness of Bro . Patten necessitating his retirement from the office of Secretary to the Freemasons' Girls' School , Bro . Parkinson , in bringing forward the motion for declaring the office vacant , paid a handsome tribute to Bro .
