St . James ' s Union Lodge ( No . 211 ) . —A very numerous and happy meeting of the members of this Lodge was held at the Freemasons' Tavern , on Tuesday , the 13 th Jan . The ceremony of installation was performed by Bro . P . M . Kelly , the W . M . being Bro . John Gurton , who , as we stated last month , had been re-elected to the chair , a compliment very seldom conferred upon a Master , but richly deserved in this instance . The Officers appointed were , Bros . Crofton , S . W . ; ShieL , J . W . ; Durley , S . D . ; Stacey , J . D . ; Soper , I . G . ; Kelly , Treas . ; and Lacon , Sec . Bros . Kiiton Poster , and Soper , were admitted to the 3 rd Degree ;

Bro , Waite was passed to the 2 nd ; and Messrs . William and Daniel Eoberts initiated into the Order—the whole of these ceremonies being performed by Bro . Gurton , the W . M ., in a manner to satisfy the members that he was worthy the continued confidence they reposed in him . Lodge business ended , the Brethren retired to the banquet ; which was followed by the usual loyal and Masonic toasts , including the health of the W . M ., which was enthusiastically received and acknowledged by Bro . Gurton , in a very feeling speech , thanking the Brethren for the compliment they had paid him in re-electing him to the chair of this excellent Lodge , and assuring them the exertions he had used during the past year would ,

if possible , be increased during the next twelve months . He would exhort Brethren to attend Lodges of Instruction as often as consistent with their business avocations ; for they could only arrive at the position he had the honour of filling by obtaining a thorough knowledge of the duties of their office . Several other toasts followed , among which was one to the joining members , Bros . Deeley and Johnson , the last of whom returned thanks , in which he made some allusion '

to Freemasonry in Australia . He had travelled in nearly all the quarters of the globe , but never had he seen the precepts of Preemasonry carried out in so true a spirit as in Australia . The visitors included Bros . Eackstraw , P . M . ; W . Watson , P . M . ; H . G . Warren , PM . ; Blackburn ; J . Smith , Grand Purs . ; Edward Hart ; Copus , W . M ., No . 752 , & c . The ball in connection with this Lodge , the proceeds of wdiich are to be devoted to Masonic charities , will take place on Thursday , February 5 .

Universal Lodge ( No . 212 ) . —The monthly meeting of this Lodge was held at the Freemasons' Tavern , on Friday , the 22 nd Jan ., when Bro . Wharton was impressively installed into the chair by the immediate P . M ., Bro . Green , who also raised two Brothers to the 3 rd Degree . The Officers for the year are Bros . Bishop , S . W . ; Barrett , J . W . ; Christie , S . D . ; Alg . Atwood , Treas . ; Beale , Sec . ; Greville , J . D . ; P . Pike , I . G . The Brethren , at the close of business , supped together ; and Bros . Ford and Lowick added to the pleasures of the evening by their excellent singing .

Joita . Lodge ( No . 223 ) . —This Lodge held a meeting at the Albion Tavern , Aldersgate-street , on Monday , January 5 th . Mr . L . Magnus was initiated , ^ the ceremony being performed by Bro . II . Lyons ., P . M . Bro . Selig then presided , and installed the new W . M ., Bro . Lewis Alexander , in effective form . The latter chose the following Officers : —Bros . Hauss , S . W . ; D . Marks , J . W . ; E . P . Albert , S . D . ; Duckker , J . D . ; H . M . Levy , I . G . ; II . Isaacs and Jacobs , Stewards ; and Yan Noorden , Org . After Lodge , the members dined—Bros .

Staples providing well . " Prosperity to the Joppa Benevolent Fund" was proposed . This fund was established in 1830 , and nearly £ 600 is in hand . After Pro , Lyons had proposed the health of the W . M ., Bro . Alexander appropriately responded . A suggestion was thrown out that a tablet should be erected to the memory of Pro . liisch , the late W . M . Amongst the- visitors were Bros . Lord William Lennox ( Inverness Lodge ) ; Lumley , No . 1 ; Hertz , of New York ; Van Goor , W . 1 M ., No . 218 ; find Friedland , San Francisco . Pro . Yan Noorden , Miss Ifcothschild , and Bros . George Genge and J . Isaacs ably assisted the musical
