Bro . Morgan felt great pleasure in responding to the toast , so complimentanly given and so cheerfully received . On behalf of himself and the Brothers of the Isca Lodge , he begged to state that it would be always their pleasing duty to reciprocate the amenities so characteristic of the mystic tie binding Masons together in the bonds of good-fellowship and philanthropy . As the noble river Usk , meandering its way through the beautiful valley of Monmouthshire , rendered its tribute to the channel of commerce outside , so he hoped that the Isca would run its tidal course as placidly and as beneficially along the banks of the Silurian , and
that they would be as useful to society as the subjects of his comparison were to theirs . The worthy Brother appositely dwelt on the advantages of harmonious brotherhood amid cheering , and continued thus : —As this is my maiden speech in Masonry , I hope that I do not abuse the privilege of my exalted position as Master of the Isca Lodge , if I trespass somewhat longer on your patience by drawing your attention to duties too frequently neglected , and seldom appreciated . It is well known to you that Masonry has a very early origin in the world's history , of which modern guilds are the popular offshoots . The earlier Masons made a moral as to
well as operative use of their tools . Those morals were particularly mentioned - day , in the course of the installation of Bro . Nicholas and myself . To you each it bears a significant meaning , which , when properly used and applied , will make you better Masons and better members of society . Time , in its advancing progress , drew the attention of kings and potentates to the excellencies of our Craft . They discovered in us the most excellent craftsmen ; our ancestors became ^ known as the most cunning in their various grades , from Tubal Cain to Hiram Abiff . Not only were they applauded for their skill in their craft , but they were also observed to be
the most moral and peaceable members of Society . Seeing this efficient good emanating from such a society , the magnates of every land sought to know the why and wherefore ; and after a while—a very long while—they , on certain conditions , were also admitted as speculative Masons : Hence , you know , we became known as operative and speculative Masons . Apply , then , I beseech you , the moral meaning of each tool to the general purposes of your every-day life , but more especially to each other as Brethren of our wide-world celebrity . We have besides them symbols—certain emblems , too—fully as characteristic of our
brotherhood . We have triads of these , from which , perhaps , the Druids of this country founded their own wise sayings . Which of you who has not always seen , in golden letters placed above your heads , the triads of Audi , Vide , el Tace ; " Faith , Hope , and Charity ; " " Brotherly Love , Belief , and Truth . " Then be wise , be learned ; hear everything , see everything ; and on Masonic subjects , in particular , be silent to the outer world . Have faith in your works ; have hope in your glorious mission ; and , above all , have charity to each other's failings , as also to all the world in general . Cultivate fraternal love ; have no wranglings , revilings , nor reproaches one with another . Let your light so shine before the world , that it of
may see what manner of men you are . Remember the lives and teachings our patron saints , John the Baptist and John the Evangelist . Bead your Testaments , and there see how beautifully , how eloquently , and how gentle are the amenities of life there portrayed . Imitate them , strive to copy their holy examples ; then the world will applaud your actions and admire your principles . Then in that golden word " Belief , " see what beneficent fruits it bears in succouring the sorrowful , relieving the distressed . How many of us are vanquished in the battle of life ; some to bankruptcy—some to insolvency— -some to one misery and some toothers . Let us , then , give to each a helping hand in the sad hours of Ins subdued and mortified agony . Let us give to the shipwrecked mariner hack again
