noble instrument . Bro . Ogburn then proceeded to the installation of the W . M . ; and to those who know that worthy Brother ' s abilities , it is needless to expatiate ; to those who do not , we say , take the first opportunity of becoming acquainted with them . The W . M . invested his Officers for the ensuing year : —Bros . Kirkman , immediate B . M . ; George Smith , S . W . ; George Molesworth , J . W . ; C . Goodeve , S . D . ; Alfred Kent , J . D . ; Charles Sturges Jones , Treas . ; Bobert Elliott , Sec . ; B . Smith , I . G . ; T . Benford , Tyler . The Lodge closed in harmony ; and the

Brethren repaired to the Council Chamber , where a sumptuous banquet , provided by Bro . Purchase , of the Globe Inn , awaited them . The W . M . presided , supported by Bros . Lord G . Lennox , Ogburn , Powell , Kirkman , and other P . Ms . ; Bev . W . Watkins , B . G . C ., Sussex , and about thirty members of the Lodge . The attendance of Brethren would have been larger , had not Sir Colin Campbell chosen this day for an inspection of the troops stationed here ; and dining at the mess prevented several of our Brethren attending . A happier or more agreeable Masonic party we never attended ; and at an early hour , adhering to the landmark , Temperance , the Brethren separated , mutually delighted .

Hastings . —Derwent Lodge ( No . 47 ) . —The Brethren of this Lodge met at the Swan Hotel , on December 29 , for the installation of the W . M . Bro . J . B . Premor , W . M ., presided , and the Lodge having been duly opened to the 2 nd Degree , and Bro . Carpenter , W . M . elect , presented , the installation ceremony was performed by Bros . J . Bannister , Prov . G . D ., and E . Eermor , P . Prov . G . S . W . of Sussex , assisted by Bros . Wood and Wheeler , of No . 394 . The Officers appointed were as follows :- —Bros . J . B . Eermor , P . M . ; Payne , S . W . ; Burchell , J . W . : Wallerd , Treas . ; J . A . Winter , Sec . ; J . Burfield , S . D . ; Bickerden ,

J . D . ; Inskip , I . G . The visitors present were Bros . Andrews , of the Shakespeare ; E . W . Wheeler , W . M . No . 27 ; W . B . Wood , W . M . No . 394 ; J . Smith , No . 37 ; Lewer , No . 40 ; J . Lee , No . 247 ; W . Beynolds , No . 657 ; W . Shearer , W . M ., and Eletcher , of No . 427 . The meeting was of a most satisfactory character . At the banquet Bro . Eermor said he had served the office of W . M . several times and had seen many fluctuations , but the Lodge was now in a higher state of prosperity than he had ever seen . Above thirty Brethren were present , and all acknowledged that Bro . Carswell deserved their thanks for the excellent banquet he bad provided .

WABWICKSHIBE . Alcester . —Apollo Lodge ( No . 378 ) . —The members of this Lodge celebrated their annual festival on Tuesday , January 21 st , when Bro . Henry Overbury was installed into the chair by Bro . Empson , P . M ., No . 51 , assisted by Bro . Dr . Hopkins , B . M ., No . 51 , and Bro . Thomas James , P . M ., No . 786 . Since the

visit of the Prov . G . Lodge in October , 1855 , several highly respectable gentlemen have been initiated in this Lodge , which , for some time past , has been partially dormant ; but it is hoped that the introduction of fresh blood will have a beneficial effect , and the Lodge will ere long attain the position it formerly held in this province .

Birmingham . ' —Howe Lodge ( No . 857 ) . —For the first time since the introduction of Preemasonry into Birmingham , the members of the Craft residing there have been enabled to meet in a home of their own . The buildings constructed for the accommodation of the Howe Lodge were completed at the close of last year ; and , on the 12 th of January , a numerous body of Brethren assembled in the new Lodgeroom , to witness the installation by Bro . Boss , retiring Master , of Bro . Marshall , his worthy successor . At the conclusion of the ceremony ( which was most

efficiently performed ) about fifty of the Brotherhood , including many distinguished members of neighbouring Lodges , repaired to the capacious dining-room , where they partook of an excellent banquet , supplied by Bro . Scott , of the Queen ' s Hotel . It is almost needless to add that the greatest harmony prevailed throughout the evening ; or that the members were heartily congratulated by their guests upon having at length established themselves in premises so commodious , to obtain which they had cheerfully endured so many inconveniences and privations . The members of this young Lodge are indeed entitled to pride themselves upon having ,
