in less than six years , accomplished what has been the vain ambition of . many other Lodges ten times older than their own , —a perfectly independent place of meeting , and an entire avoidance of what has been justly termed the curse and stigma of Masonry , the holding of its meetings at taverns . The grand principle promulgated by its founders at the outset , viz . that the funds contributed for Masonic purposes , should he applied to Masonic purposes only , and that the expense of all banquets should be defrayed by those who partook of them , has been adhered to

most scrupulously , not one farthing of the siibscriptions having been appropriated to revelling . Amongst other projects , the views of the Brethren extend to the establishment on their premises of Masonic Club-rooms , and the formation of a library for the use of the members ; so that the recommendation to novices to make the liberal arts and sciences their future study , may receive due aid towards its being carried into effect , and not , as is too generally the case , allowed to

evaporate in empty words . An ample sum . has been voted from the Lodge funds for this purpose ; many members have promised donations of books ; and , as the appropriate nucleus of a Masonic collection , the Secretary has presented a set of the " Freemasons' Magazine , " from the period of its establishment in 1834 to the present time . In brief , everything appears to indicate that the Brethren of the Howe are fully resolved to continue acting up to the spirit of their expressive motto , Onwabd !

WORCESTERSHIRE . Dudley . —Harmonic Lodge ( No . 313 ) . —The Installation Meeting of this Lodge was held on . Tuesday , the 4 th of January , when a Bro . was passed to the 2 nd Degree . The following are the Officers for the ensuing year : —The Bev . T . W . Herbert , W . M . ; C . P . G . Clark , S . W . ; W . Wigginton , J . W . ; M . Dennison ( P . M . ) , Treas . ; W . Bristow ( P . M . ) , Sec . ; W . Loxton , S . D . ; T . Morris ( P . M . ) , J . D . : T . Timmins , I . G-. : F . Garner . Tyler . The banquet reflected great credit

upon mine host of the Saracen ' s Head , Bro . E . Roberts , who catered admirably for the creature comforts of his Brethren . After-dinner speeches are legitimate subjects for our pages , but our readers care but little for any unless weighted with something important or novel either in the subject-matter or deliverer . We therefore pass over the speeches upon this occasion , as there was nothing that called for careful elaboration . The Officers promise to work well , and sustain the character of the mother Lodge of the province .

Royal Standard Lodge ( No . 730 ) . —This Lodge met as usual at the Dudley Arms Hotel , Dudley , on Tuesday the 13 th January , and after the transaction of ordinary business adjourned , with its visitors , to banquet , when a very pleasant evening was passed . Vernon Lodge ( No . 819 ) . — -This Lodge , held at the old Town Hall , Dudley , on Wednesday , January 21 st , was honoured with a visit from the R . W . Bro . If . C . Vernon , the Brov . G . M ., accompanied hy the R . W . Bro . J . C . Vyne , P . Prov . G . S . W . of Somersetshire , and attended hy the V . W . Bros . W . Marcfield , Prov .

Gwynne , Chaplain to the Lodge ( and Prov . G . Chap , of Staffordshire ) , givin ^ the charge in a beauti fu l and impressive manner . The R . W . Bro . 11 . ( J . Vernon expressed himself highly pleased with the working of the Lodge and the manifest efficiency of its officers , and kindly consented to the unanimous wish ot the members to be enrolled on its list as an honorary member , the Lodge having

been re-christened upon its transfer to Dudley in his mime . It affords us ample gratification to state that the D . Prov . CM . of the province ( Sir E . A . II . hechmerc , Bart . ) is a subscribing member , and to notice the great progress the Lodge has made since its inauguration in September last . It may appear invidious on our part thus to notice this ( the fourth ) Dudley Lodge ; but the truly Masonic spirit , and the groat zeal and ability shown by its members , together with the peculiar object of the Lodge , absolutely claimed at our hands that which ,
