On the 12 th < an inquest resulting in a verdict of temporary-insanity , was held on the body of Mr . Higgs , the coroner for the Surrey district . On the-14 th the Tyne Royal Steam Packet Company ' s ship from Brazil went ashore on Portland Head . The crew and most of the eargo were saved . On the 16 th , honest John Paul , the clerk of the City of London Union , was committed for trial ) on the charge of embezzlement of the public money committed

to , his care . On the 19 th the hank of Ireland was greatly injured by a conflagration which for a time threatened the destruction of the entire edifice . On the same day a , verdict of wilful murder was returned by a coroner ' s jury , against Philip White , a shoemaker , residing at Chesham , charged with having administered arsenic to his wife .

On the 24 th was concluded a lengthened police investigation of a series of charges of obtaining goods ! under false pretences , brought against Mr . Barber , the secretary of th e Samaritan Institution , West Smithfield . Mr . Barbe r ' s defence was most complete ) notwithstanding that he had to struggle ; against the strongest bias we have-ever seen brought to bear at any trial . The parties ought to be ashamed of themselves .

On the 1 st of January appeared the prospectus of a new railway company , which is promoting the farther extension of public works in India , by opening up a railway in the newly-almexed territory—the kingdom of Oude . The same day was published the yearly statement of the public income , from which it appeared that the revenue for the past year amounted to £ 72 , 218 , 988 , being an increase of £ 3 , 97 7 , 772 on that of the previous year . Every item with the exception of one exhibited an increase , and on that one ( miscellaneous ) there

was a decrease to the extent of £ 131 . 901 . On the 2 nd , the London Dock Company held their annual meeting , and declared a dividend of 2 J per cent ., short of income-tax . The report stated that although the business of the docks had increased , there was yet a diminution of profits , on account of the high price of labour and commodities . On the 7 th , at the half-yearly meeting of the Union Bank of London , a dividend of 5 per cent ., with a bonus of' 2 J per cent ., was declared on the paid-up capital , out of the profits for the last six months , being at the rate of 15 per cent , per annum .

On the 9 th , the proprietors of the East and West India Docks met , and declared a dividend of 6 percent , out of the net profits for the year ( £ 68 , 000 ) , carrying £ 6 , 000 to the account of the current year . On the same day , a special meeting of the New Brunswick Company reduced their capital from £ 800 , 000 to £ 400 , 000 , in 20 , 000 shares of £ 20 each . The same day , the Alten Mining Company met , when it was stated that by reason of the high rate of freights , and the fall in the price of copper , there had been sustained a loss of £ 2 , 678 on the transactions of the past year .

On the 15 th , the London Joint-Stock Bank Company , out of the profits of the last half year ( £ 84 , 217 ) , declared a dividend of £ 6 . 5 s . per cent , equivalent to 12 , ^ per cent , per annmm . There was also declared a bonus of 15 s . 6 d . per share , and a sum of £ 217 . 4 « s 9 cZ . was carried to the guarantee fund .

The same day , an important meeting was held at the London Tavern , to take steps towards legalizing the transfer of dock-warrants , and similar securities . On the 20 th , the City Bank declared a dividend of 5 per cent ., and carried forward £ 3 , 742 . 10 s , 7 d . to the account of the current year . On the same day , there was a meeting of the St .
