out of which a dividend of 2 } per cent , was paid in July last . A similar dividend was declared for the last six months . The Norfolk Estuary Company met , and urged the directors to the speedy execution of the works . On the 21 st , the London and Westminster Banking Company met , and declared a dividend and bonus equivalent to 9 per cent , for the half year . The net profits for the past year amounted to £ 84 , 755 8 s . 7 d .

pmyvwmT . On the 1 st , the Clerical , Medical , and General Life Assurance Company held a meeting for the sixth division of their profits . The assets of the company were stated at £ 1 , 154 , 276 ; 7 s ., and the liabilities at £ 906 , 898 . 6 s . 6 d ., leaving a surplus of £ 247 , 878 . Out of this sum it was resolved to divide among the shareholders and the assured £ 195 , 000 , in the proportion of one-sixth to the former and fivesixths to the latter .

On the 8 th , the Briton Life Assurance Association held their third annual meeting . The report stated that the board had issued 503 policies , assuring £ 1 , 03 , 456 , and yielding an income in premiums to the extent of £ 3 , 415 . 16 s . 5 d . per annum . The total annual income is at present £ 6 , 090 . 19 s . Sd .

¦ BENEVOLENT . . ; On the 13 th , a meeting of the governors of the City of London Hospital for Diseases of the Chest Was held , when it was reported that the out patients , averaging 812 weekly , numbered for the past year 5 , 687 , being an increase of 953 on the returns of the previous year . There were , during the same period , 242 patients attended to in the wards , of whom 50 were discharged cured , 139 relieved , and 18 had died .

On the 14 th , the . Royal Humane Society held its half-yearly meeting , and voted several silver medals to persons who had saved the lives of their fellow creatures from drowning , On the 19 th , the Royal Naval Benevolent Society met , and reported that the committee had during the year expended £ 1 , 678 in grants for the relief of the distressed families of officers belonging to that service .

On the same day , there was a meeting of the friends of the British Orphan Asylum , when six children , out of a list of twenty-two candidates , were admitted into the asylum . PUBLIC AMUSEMENTS . The Christmas pantomimes and extravaganzas still continue to attract crowds to the metropolitan theatres . On the 5 th , a new piece of a lively character , written by Mr . Yates , was put on the boards of the Adelphi . It is entitled "A Night at Notting-hill . "

The great theatrical event of the month , however , was one which does not come properly under this heading . It was the production of a new piece called " The Frozen Deep , " played by amateurs , at Mr . Dickens ' s private theatricals .

MISCELLANEOUS . At home the whole energies of the people seem to have been concentrated in the effort to get rid of the oppressive and inquisitorial income tax ; and it would be difficult to mention a provincial town of any importance which has not , by a public meeting , swelled the cry of its denouncement . The climax of the whole was a deputation to the Chancellor of the Exchequer on the 23 rd , when that right lion , gentleman stated that the government would not pursue a pettyfogging course of action in availing themselves of the wording of the act of parliament , to continue the war ninepence for a year beyond the 5 th of next April .

On the 30 th of December , Lord Panmure was entertained at a great public dinner by his admirers in Dundee . On the 31 st , Sir Peter Laurie , at Guildhall police court , complained of the frequency of offences committed by foreigners ; and pronounced the requiem of the dying year by designating it the blackest in fraud and crime he had ever known .
