On the sanie day , Mr . NV . B . Hawkins commenced at the Crystal Palace a most interesting series oflectures upon extinct aiirniadsr The ne inaugurated in point of charity by Miss Coutts > who liberally entertained with roast beef and pluin-pudding the children of the district schools of Stepney , she herself superintending the festivities . On the 1 st of January-, too ( romance yielding before the advance of practical common sense ) , for ever ceased the G-retna-green nuisance .

On the same day died Mr . Britton , the celebrated architect , author of the " Arch apology of Wiltshire , " and also of the well-knownwork descriptive of the English cathedrals . On the 2 nd there was a great meeting of the members of the ancient Order of Druids held at Oxford ^ which was attended by the Bight Hon . Mr . Cardwell , M . P . for that city .

On the same day Mr . Thackeray commenced , at the Maryleboiie Institution , a lecture on the history of the four Georges . On the 5 th there was a fearful exposure at the Thames Police-office , of the treatment which the Chinese coolies receive on their passage to Havannah . On the same day a public meeting was held at the Mansion-house , to thank Dr . Livingstone for his important geographical discoveries . On the 5 th , too , Dr . Mayo was elected President of the College of Physicians ,

in succession to the late Dr . Paris . A public meeting was held at Dublin to raise a fund for the support of the family of Mr . Little , the victim of the Broadstare murder . On this day , too , died the Bight Bev . Dr . Wilson , bishop of Cork , Cloyne , and Boss , who , if not a Mason , was yet distinguished by all the Masonic virtues . At Birmingham on this day Sir Bobert Peel , M . P ., delivered a lecture descriptive of the late coronation f'Stes in Bussia , which h as brought a regular hornets ' nest about his ears ; and very deservedly , for it was a discourse which bore no internal evidence of the accomplished mind of a gentleman .

On the 6 th were published in the London Gazette the despatches relative to the attack upon Canton . This day the Odontologicai Society held its first meeting . On the same day arrived off Punmoe , on the coast of Waterford , the ship Montmorency , having completed the journey from Melbourne in seventy days . On the 6 th , too , there was held a public meeting of the merchants of Liverpool , to raise a fund for the support of the families of the thirteen brave fellows who lost their lives by the capsizing of the life-boat at Bhyh On the 7 th , Sir L . Brotherton , M . P ., died suddenly in an omnibus , near Manchester .

On the 8 th died another member of the House of Commons , our Bro . in Masonry Sir Edward Filmer , Bart ., member for West Kent . On this day , too , Mr . Bawlinson lectured at St , Martin ' s Hall , upon recent geographical discoveries in relation to the Bible . On the 10 th there was a grand Poultry Show at the Crystal Palace . On the same day Dr . Humphrey , of Cheltenham , delivered the annual address

at the annual meeting of the College of Preceptors . On the 13 th old Bochester-bridge was blown up by the Royal Engineers . On the 14 th Abraham Lock , a boy who had been refused relief at the Western London L nion , was brought before the alderman for a petty theft , which he committed to secure a shelter in prison . On the 15 th there was a public meeting held at the Freemasons * Tavern , to denounce the smuggling of opium in China . The same evening Professor Safh lectured at the Marylebone Institution , on the present and future of Italy .

On the same day Sir Edward Lytton Bulwer Lytton , M , P ., was installed Lord Rector of the University of Glasgow . On the 17 th a deputation from the parish of St . James ' s , Westminster , waited on the Home Secretary , to call his attention to the extent to which prostitution and gambling were carried on in their neighbourhood , and praying him to put hem down by the police .
