On thei 18 thDr . Biekersteth was consecrated bishop of Ripon . On the 19 th there was a meeting of the Shoe Trade ^ held at the Freemasons Tavern , when it was resolved to raise the scale of prices . The same day there was a second meeting of persons out of employment held in Smithfield , complaining of the administration of the poor law , and to take measures to secure employment for themselves , A similar meeting had been held on the 12 th . lord

On the 20 th His Grace the Duke of Butland , after a long illness , died at Belvoir Castle . On the same evening the parishioners of St . Giles , Bloomsbury , presented their late rector , the bishop of Ripon , with a magnificent testimonial of their regard and afiection ;

On Tuesday , the 20 th January , at his residence , Castle-street , Dudley , Bro . Thos . Copper , Law Stationer , for many years , and up to his decease , a member of the Lodge of Perseverance , No . 838 , of which Lodge he was formerly Secretary . His remains were consigned to the family vault at Old Swinford , near Stourbridge , on Friday , the 23 rd . The deceased Brother had long been labouring under bronchitis , but his end at the last was very sudden , as he had been in the town on the afternoon of the day preceding his death . He was a Law Stationer by profession , and the Title-page of the Minute Book of the Lodge will long contain a record of his great skill in the art of penmanship .

BBO . FRANCIS PURGES . We regret to announce the death , on the 5 th of January ( at his residence , Salisbury-street , Strand , in his 46 th year ) , of Bro . Francis Burges , W . M . of the Grand Stewards' Lodge , and a member of the Board of General Purposes . Our deceased Bro . was initiated in the Lodge of Peace and Harmony January , 1845 , and was elevated to the chair in 1849 , serving for that Lodge the office of G .

Steward in 1850-1 , He was also a member of the Portsmouth Lodge , and of the Frederick Lodge at Croydon , of whieh he was W . M . in 1854 . He was exalted in the Chapter of Fidelity , and subsequently joined the Croydon Chapter , in which he went through the chairs . The genial manners of our deceased Bro . rendered him a general favourite , and by all who knew him his loss is deeply felt .

This highly respected member of the Fraternity , and much revered pastor , after having devoted his life to the service of the G . A . O . T . U . and the well-being of his parishioners , departed this life on the 30 th day of December , 1856 % in the sixtyiifth year of his ao'e . He was indeed a good man and a good Mason , tie was for

many years the incumbent of Tockholls , in the parish of Blackburn , and was well known in Lancashire , and as well respected . He has departed from the scene of his useful activity amidst the regrets of \ m flock and the endearing recollections of a host of attached friends , by whom his many amiable qualities were
