Summary Of News For March.

At the half yearly meeting of the Railway Passengers Assurance Company , the same day , Mr . Vian , the Secretary , read a report which said : —The amount of premiums for the half-year to 31 st . Dec received and due , is 4 , 394 / . 3 s . Oaf ., making with that for the previous six months , a total income of 9 , 488 / . 17 s . 3 d . for the year just closed . The amount actually received is 3 , 516 / . 14 s . 10 d ., which , with the balance from last half-year , and the interest on investments , makes the sum of 7 , 294 / . 6 s . to credit of revenue account . The disbursements include , besides

the ordinary expenses , the large sum of 2 , 246 / . 2 s . lid . for compensation , and a charge of 150 / . towards the liquidation of preliminary expenses , in all 5 , 424 / . 9 s . Od . and this leaves a balance of 2 , 747 / . 4 s . lid ., from which sum your directors recommend the payment of interest of the paid up capital , at the rate of 4 per cent , per annum , free from income tax . It stated that the Directors issued the first policy on the 30 th of Sept ., 1853 . and to the 31 st of Dec . last , the board had issued 1 , 855 policies , insuring lh'e stock valued at 285 , 539 / ., the premiums upon Avhich amounted to 8 , 277 / ., Avhilst the claims had amounted to 6 , 377 / ., exclusive of salvage . The business was increasing , and the board had every expectation of an extended success . The report AA'as adopted .

The Merchant and Tradesmen ' s Mutual Life Assurance Society held its annual meeting on the 15 th . The report , which was adopted , said— " Tho number of proposals for assurance submitted during the year was 911 , for sums amounting to 209 , 135 / . ; the number of policies issued from February 1 , 1854 , to January 31 , 1855 , had been 797 , assuring 182 , 735 / . ; the premiums on which amounted to 5 , 491 / . 16 s . 3 c / . ; the amount assured prior to Feb . 1 , 1854 , and still in force AA'as , on 1467 polices 357666 / . ; the annual premiums on which were 11251 / 8 s 6 d

so that the present condition of the society might be stated at 6 , 000 , 000 / . of risk , to meet which they had one million and a half of invested capital , and a premium income of 168 , 121 / . per annum . The Professional Life Assurance Company held its annual meeting on the 28 th , when the new manager ( Mr . Massey ) presented a report , which showed that during the past year there had been issued 630 new policies , assuring 263 , 320 / ., and producing an income , from premiums , of 7 , 541 / ., being a large increase on the business of the previous year . The premium income of the company is now about 30 , 000 / .
