REVIEWS OF 1 TEW BOOKS .
[ Publishers are requested to send works for review not later than the 20 th of the month , addressed to the Editor of the " Freemasons' Monthly Magazine , " 74-5 , Great Queen-street , Lincoln ' s-Inn Fields . ]
" Canadian Masonic Pioneer . " Montreal : Bros . Owler and Stevenson . This very good Masonic periodical will doubtless achieve the success it deserves . We cannot account for the non-receipt of our own Magazine by the publishers of the " Canadian Pioneer , " who complain that none of its subscribers have received the Freemasons' Monthly Magazine for six months . In future , we hope that such impediment will not exist , since it is more than ever necessary that the channel oi intercommunication between American Brethren and ourselves be free and facile . "Indian Freemasons' Friend . " Calcutta and London : Thacker and Co .
The June and July numbers of this magazine have reached us ; they are replete with intelligence and true Masonic spirit , and as local extends into general interest , the paper will obtain all the elements now requisite for perfect adaptation to its purpose . "American Freemason" No . 15 . Louisville and New York Bro . S . W . Leonard and Co . This is the facile princeps of all our trans-Atlantic Masonic periodicals . We have marked several pieces for quotation ; the engravings are admirable , and the matter first-rate . We cordially commend the papers on By-laws , and also on Female Lodges , to general attention . The portrait of our celebrated Brother , General Washington , is most artistically executed . "The Masonic Review . " Cincinnati : Cornelius Moore . Added to very superior illustration , the literature of this journal must place it very high in public estimation .
Some of the papers are excellent , especially " The Star Spirit , by Thomas Dufour . " The Masonic Messenger" New York : Drurnmond . In connection with this paper , we have also received a printed statement of the duties and qualifications of candidates and officers , resolved on by the Grand Lodge of New York . The magazine itself is well conducted , striking , and talented , and the rules are evidently founded on solid experience and sound sense . " Christian Love the Bond of Society : " a Sermon , by Bro . the Rev . W . E . HiiDOW , Pro v . G . Chap , for Devon . This discourse was delivered by our worthy Brother at the
consecration of the Lodge of Benevolence , No . 964 , at Prince Town , Dartmoor . From the beautiful text ( Bom . xii . 10 ) , the eloquent writer takes occasion to enforce the observance of the principle of Christian philanthropy , but if the reader imagines this is done in the common trite fashion usual in discourses on charity , he is much mistaken . Powerfully original thought is brought to bear on the development of self-government and self-knowledge as fundamentally necessary to the manifestation of Brotherly love , and the whole discourse is characterized by intellect of the highest order , as well as by Christian amiability of the strongest
glow . To read such a production by a Brother is a gratification to every Member of the Fraternity . " Prize Essay on the Prevention of the Smolce Nuisance" by C . W . Williams , Ass . Inst . C . E . Weale , 59 , High Holborn . The author , in his previous essay " On the Combustion of Coal chemically considered / ' exemplified thorough acquaintance with the economic and sanative principles of the subject when practically considered . In this present work no new theory is offered , but
in ten sections the matter is brought before the mind so admirably as to inform it at once of all preceding endeavours , and of the evidence arrived at for a speedy and satisfactory settlement of the whole question . The means of preventing the nuisance , and the legislative enactment are set forth clearly , as well as the economy and causes of failure ; and even a brief perusal will fully justify the allotment of the special prize which the work gained from the Society for the Encouragement of Arts , Manufactures , and Commerce .
