vince , and it is with prideful feelings that I now look back on the conduct and bearing of the Brethren thereof , for with three solitary exceptions , I have never found it needful to exercise the authority with which I was invested , for the Brethren have always manifested an earnest desire—a commendable readinessto obey the Laws and maintain the Constitutions , and hence my duties have been pleasing , for I ever found my Brethren willing to receive a fraternal caution or a
friendly suggestion from me ; and where will you finda Province which for the long period of nineteen years can exhibit such a clean bill ? and free the while from censure or rebuke from our high authorities , saving the case referred to hereafter , when the law was with us , and right on our side ; and yet I venture to assert that there is not a Province , as a whole , in the kingdom , in which greater order , better discipline , and more zealous adherence to the forms , constitutions and landmarks of the Craft can be found , than in the Province of West Yorkshire .
My dear Brethren , I have been proud to mark your progress as a Province . I have been ambitious to observe West Yorkshire bold a station among the Masonic provinces becoming the importance of the district , and I have been ever solicitous that this province should gain credit for its works of charity and brotherly love , and become stronger and stronger by its moral weight rather than by its numerical force . On all occasions you have cheered me on in the discharge of my official duties ; nay , such hath been your zeal to support me , that well do I remember one
occasion , when it became necessary to check the ardour of your feelings : I allude to the period when the Lodge of St . Germain , at Selby , which is in the West Biding , having obtained a warrant of constitution , without any communication having been made thereupon to the Prov . Grand Master of West Yorkshire , or his Deputy , as the constitutions required , I made respectful remonstrance on the subject to the Most Worshipful Grand Master ; but his fiat was irrevocable—right must submit to might ; and by an unparalleled stretch of the prerogative , the
Lodge of St , Germain at Selby was wrested from its natural geographical position in the West Biding , and was planted in the East Biding . You appealed not to the Grand Lodge , but like true Masons , though disturbed , you bowed to the authority of your superior , for the sake of Masonic peace . I have thus taken a bird ' s-eye view of the nineteen years of our Masonic association , and now , my dear Brethren , that association hath terminated—I have resigned mine office , and the Bight Worshipful Prov . Grand Master has graciously accepted my resignation ,
and I am no longer your Deputy—but never shall I forget your fraternal attention , your unceasing kindness , your zealous adherence , and your constant support and encouragement , and I pray the G . A . O . T . U . to pour down abundantly upon you , collectively and individually , every blessing which you can desire or conceive . May your Prov . Grand Lodge maintain an honourable position—aim at excellence and excel in virtue . May your Lodges prosper , be in unity , and delight in good
works , and may the Brethren ever meet together in love , peace , and harmony— - and may health and happiness , peace and contentment , be with you all and each of you , and with all who are near and dear unto you ; and I bid you farewell . And my dear Brethren , I am , Ever yours , faithfully and truthfully , Leeds , 12 th September 1856 . Charles Lee .
