St . George ' s , Commercial , St . Clair ' s , Renfrew County , Kilwinning , and various other Lodges of Freemasons . The presentation was made amid great applause . Bro . Donald Campbell said , amid much applause , it was impossible for him to express how deeply he felt the compliment they had that night conferred on him . At the same time he would say that he had at all times tried to do \ m best for the interest of the Craft in Glasgow and elsewhere . He had fallen short of what he
might have done , from other engagements coining in the way ; but he would at all times be happy to further not only the interests of this Lodge , but of all the Lodges in Grlasgow . He might never have been of the least service had he not been aided by Bro . Dr . Arnott , who put him right in the path of Masonry . ( Here Bro . Campbell became deeply affected by the applause and ' generous spirit evinced towards him by the Brethren , and after a momentary pause resumed . ) He could not sufficiently thank them for the high testimony of their esteem they had that night presented to him .
The Lodge was then opened , and Bro . J . Home , S . M ., in the absence of the B . W . Master , from whom the following letter was read , took the chair : — " Glasgow , Sept . 15 , 1856 . " My Deab Sir , —I had hoped to have been at the presentation of plate to Bro . Donald Campbell , but I must deny myself the pleasure , as important business necessitates my leaving here by the four o ' clock train for England this day . May I ask you to express to Bro . Campbell my hope that he may long live to enjoy himself at table with the presentation plate before him . " I am , yours truly ,
" J . Horne , Esq . " " W . B . Huggins . " Bro . Home , who was received with much applause , then rose to make the presentation of an elegant and handsome service of silyer plate , value £ 130 , subscribed for by the members of St . Mark ' s Lodge . In the course of his remarks he said Bro . Dr . Arnott had explained how valuable the services of Bro . Campbell had been to Masonry in the West of Scotland . By his unceasing exertions Masonry had been advanced to a very great extent , and it had been his constant
endeavour to progress the Lodge of St . Mark with which he was more immediately connected . With the single exception of Bro . Br . Arnott , he did not know another individual who had performed so much service to Masonry in the west of Scotland as the Brother to whom the presentation was to be made . It had been his constant exertion to place this Lodge in as high a position as possible . In consideration of the services which he had endeavoured to perform , and which he bad performed to the satisfaction of one and all present , they thought it right to present him with a service of plate as an interpretation of the sense they entertained of the value of his labours .
The service of plate was then presented , amid tremendous cheering , to Bro . Campbell . The tray bore the following inscription : — "Presented to Bro . Donald Campbell , with silver tea and coffee services and salver , by the Brethren of St . Mark ' s Lodge , in testimony of his exertions for the benefit of that Lodge , and for services rendered to it during the years 1853-4-5-6 . Glasgow , August . 1856 . "
Bro . D . Campbell said it was out of his power to express to them his thanks for this handsome testimony with which they had favoured him . He then proceeded to give an account of his first connection with the Lodge , and concluded , amid renewed applause , by stating that he would treasure the testimonial highly , and thanking them most sincerely .
When the Lodge had been called to refreshment , and the toast " The Queen and the Craft" right loyally answered—the Grand Lodges of Scotland , England , Ireland followed , separately coupled with the names of their respective Grand Masters . Bro . Home then gave the " Prosperity of the Prov . Grand Lodge of Glasgow , and its able Secretary Bro . D . Campbell , " who , in responding , again thanked the meeting for the honours that night conferred on him . Before concluding , the worthy Brother alluded to the assistance received by him in carrying through the concerns of the Lodge St . Mark from all its office-bearers , and referred more
