I again repeat , that I accept with pride and pleasure the high and distinguished compliment paid to me this evening , not as due to any merit I can boast of , but as a memorial of that kind and truly fraternal feeling w hich I have ever experienced at your hands ; and it is gratifying to me to think that when I can no longer share your Masonic labours or social pleasures , this portrait may occasionally remind you of an old friend and Brother , some of whose happiest hours have been spent within the walls of this Lodge .
And if the sight of this portrait should hereafter stimulate any of our younger Brethren to aspire after , and more especially to endeavour to qualify themselves for , the offices and honours of their more experienced Brethren—if it should serve to impress more forcibly on their minds the dignity and high value of our noble Craft , and strengthen their resolves never to disgrace it—this ceremony , so honourable to me , will not have been altogether in vain ; and the portrait of even so humble an individual as myself may not be altogether without its use in promoting the cause of Freemasonry when the original shall be no more seen amongst you . "
The address of the R . W , Brother was listened to with the deepest attention , and seemed to create a deep impression on the minds of all present . Other business having been transacted the Brethren adjourned to the banquet given to the R . W . D . Prov . G . M . Bro . Ward , and provided in the usual style by Bros . Yenables and Swift . About forty Brethren sat down , and were presided
over by Bro . Dilworth , the W . M ., who was supported by the R . W . D . Prov . G . M . Bro . Ward ; Y . W . LeYeau , Prov . G . S . B . ; W . K . Harvey and Glover , No . 803 ; Davenport , No . 660 ; Mason , Hallam , Broomhall , H . Hall , W . Cartwright , F . Crewe , & c , P . Ms , of No . 674 . The whole of the proceedings were marked by great goodwill and kindly fellowship .
SOMERSETSHIRE . PROVINCIAL GRAND LODGE . Taunton . — On Thursday , the 11 th September , a Prov . Grand Lodge of Emergency was held at Taunton to consider the bye-laws of the province , and to alter and amend the same . The Prov . Grand Lodge was received at half-past one by the Lodge of Unanimity and Sincerity , No . 327 , and in
the unavoidable absence of the R . W . Prov . Grand Master through serious , illness , the D . Prov . Grand Master presided , with the Y . W . Bro . Charles Haseler , P . M ., No . 48 , and the P . Prov . S . G . W . on his right . Bros . White , P . M ., No . 48 ; P . Prov . S . G . W . as S . G . W , ; the Hon . Major Napier , F . J . G . W . as J . G . W . ; Y . W . Falconer , Prov . G . Treas . ; Y . W . Browne , Prov . G . Sec . : and other Prov . G . Officers . The attendance on this occasion was small , and four Lodges were unrepresented .
The Prov . Grand Secretary , having read the summons , was desired by the Y . W . D . Prov . Grand Master to read the seven notices of motion for altering the bye-laws , which had been handed in by Bro . Percy Wells , P . M ., No . 48 ; and after this had been done , the D . Prov . Grand Master advised the Brethren to refer their consideration to a committee ; upon which the Prov . G . Treas ., Bro . Dr . Falconer , rose to propose that one member from each Lodge should be represented in the committee ; but there being only six Lodges present , two
Brethren from the Royal Cumberland Lodge , No . 48 , were chosen , instead ol one , to form a committee of seven , which consisted of the following Brethren : —Bros Percy Wells , P . M ., No . 48 ; E . White , P . M ., No . 48 ; Francis Smith , S . W ., No . 61 ; A . P . Browne , P . M ., No . 07 , Prov . G . Sec . ; Henry Bridges , P . M ., No . 367 , W . M . No . 38 ; Hon . Major Napier , P . M ., No . 327 , P . Prov . J . G . W .
Dr . Falconer , P . M ., No . 528 , and Prov . G . Treas . The Lodge was then called from labour to refreshment , and during this period the committee retired to amend the bye-laws ; and having agreed to a code , they returned to the Lodge . During their absence the D . Prov . Grand Master was summoned away on important business , and the chair was taken by the V . W . Bro . C . Haseler , P .
