Scotland,
particularly to his able coadjutor Bro . Bobert Mitchell , the indefatigable Secretary , the amount of whose duties few of the members could imagine , and the pages of whose minute-hook amply testified to his labours in behalf of the Lodge . Bro . Campbell then begged Bro . Mitchell to accept at his hands a slight but sincere mark of esteem , and amidst the enthusiastic applause of the Brethren presented to him a handsome writing-desk , on which the following inscription
was engraved : — "To Bro . R . Mitchell , from Bro . D . Campbell , in token of his unwearied co-operation in the management of the Lodge Saint Mark , September , 1856 . " Bro . Mitchell , in reply , said it was seldom the good fortune and privilege
of a young man to receive , under the circumstances of that evening , so elegant a gift , and that too in the presence of so numerous and respectable an assembly of Brethren , not only of this , his mother Lodge , but of the many other ancient Lodges there met . Their warm plaudits showed that by all his services were more than appreciated . He had been taken by surprise , not having anticipated nor dreamed that the honour now bestowed on him had been in reserve . To all
the Brethren for their congratulations , and to Bro . Campbell , a true and good friend , for his unexpected and highly-prized gift , he tendered sincere thanks . Their appreciation would be an incentive to him to endeavour , if possible , to make what they considered good , better , and in his heart their kindness he truly felt , and would long remember . Deputations from the following Lodges graced the occasion with their presence , viz . : —Glasgow St . John ' s , Glasgow Kilwinning , St . Mungo ' s , Thistle and
Bose , Biggar Free Operatives , Glasgow St . George ' s , Commercial , St . Clair , and Benfrew County Kilwinning , and to each a toast was dedicated and duly acknowledged . The often-repeated , but not the less beautiful words , — " Happy to meet , sorry to part , and happy to meet again , " spoken by the officiating R . W . M . in accents slow and sure , and echoed in the south and west by the efficient Wardens , Bros . John Beid and Bobert Thomson , jun ., concluded the labours and refreshment of a successful and most agreeable meeting .
BOYAL ABCH
SUPREME GRAND CHAPTER . Edinburgh . —A quarterly meeting of the Chapter took place on Wednesday , September 17 th , M . E . Dr . Walker Arnott , First Grand Brincipal in the chair ; E . C . Dr . W . D . MacBitchie , Acting H . ; E . C . Archibald Douglas , Acting J . The minutes of last quarterly meeting were read and approved of . A Beport by the Committee appointed to inspect the Chapters falling this year to be visited , which were those situated in the Northern District of Scotland , was produced and read to the meeting . These periodic visitations have now extended
over a period of three years , and it is expected that their continuance for two years more will accomplish a yisit to each of the existing Chapters upon the Boll , and situated within Scotland . The Beport stated the gratification it had afforded the Committee to be received in the manner they had b > een by the various Chapters they had been commissioned to visit , and that although they had , with regret , to notice in some cases a departure from the authorized
mode of working , they rejoiced to find an anxious desire on the part of one and all to be corrected in any error or omission which might he observed to prevail . Where any such did exist , the Committee had been careful to point it out , and the instruction imparted had in every instance been gratefully received , amidst expressions of warm attachment to the Supreme Body , and a desire for their work and zeal being such as to command their approbation . An application from certain members of Chapter Kilwinning in the East at
Calcutta , No . 64 , which has for several years been in a state of dormancy , and now praying to be restored to privileges , was read to and considered by the meeting . It appeared that the cause of dormancy in this case bad arisen from a certain persecuting spirit which had of late manifested itself in Calcutta towards the existence there of Scotch Boyal Arch Masonry , and this had led to a cessation
