officers , together with the orthodox clergy . In the southern provinces they were looked upon as the Messiahs of liberty . The metropolitan Joseph was at that time chief of the diocese of Astrakhane . He had grown old in court intrigues ; and having sold

himself body and soul to the Czarat , had attained his present high rank through hypocrisy and the meanest compliance with the reigning powers . Throughout the south he was abhorred as the instigator of the horrible fate of the proto-pretra Daniel , who was , at intervals , roasted to death before a slow fire : these fearful tortures continued

for several months , till nature sunk beneath them . Steneke Razme condemned Joseph to the same punishment ; but he died from fright before it could be put into execution , and his body was thrown into the moat .

For many years he securely wandered over the coasts of the "White Sea , exciting

the people by his patriotic harangues , and exhorting them to protest against the advent of despotism ; and , meeting force by force , avoid the utter degradation prepared for them by the Muscovite system . The spies of the Czarat discovered his plans , and Barthelemy , the superior of the monastery of Solofski , who had done nothing to arrest the insurrectionary movement , was summoned to Moscow , and

thrown into prison . Prince Loof , and Sabbatius , the treasurer of the monastery , were also arrested , and disappeared in the prisons of the interior ; while the Archimandrite Nikanore , formerly confessor to the Czar , and superior of the monastery of St . Sabinus , took Bartheleiny ' s place . He , in course of time , became one of the most energetic chiefs of the opposition ; and it is remarkable that he was the third confessor of the Czarat to be found among its most

strenuous opponents . The missions of Loof and Sabbatius were not fruitless . The whole country rose as one man ,, Abzarie and Gerouli , the most liery of the
