Massachusetts . —Some dissatisfaction has been caused amongst members of the Jewish faith in Boston , and other parts of America , in consequence of the Masonic prayers having been made so sectarian as virtually to exclude them from Freemasonry . In 1851 the Jewish Brethren of Boston presented a petition to the Grand Lodge of Massachusetts , praying that Freemasonry in that jurisdiction should be placed on its ancient basis , namely , non-sectarian : that prayers in Lodges should be addressed alone to the Supreme Being , and that allusion to
Christian saints and Christianity should form no part or parcel of Freemasonry . The committee to whom the matter was referred , after great delay , reported against the petitioners , stating in their report , amongst other curious allegations , " The petitioners say in their petition , that Masonry was intended to unite men of every country , sect , and opinion . This is not so . All reasoning , therefore , on the subject is erroneous . " This is not so , is certainly a very ready method of getting rid of the complaint ; but if it be not , the Masonry we have been taught and that of Massachusetts must be very different .
Monte Yideo . — -The following letter from Bro . Edwin Gardner , who was initiated in St . David's Lodge , Dundee , No . 78 , in Jul y ^ 1853 , will be read with interest , as showing the truly Masonic feeling which exists amongst our South American Brethren . The Brethren , native and foreign , no sooner heard of rny case than they assisted rne ; they subscribed more than sufficient money to pay the passage by mailpacket for my wife and self , and otherwise assisted me . I write this at their request , as they wish it to be known to the Lodges in England that they know how , and are willing to assist a Brother in distress ( my case is far from being the only one that has been assisted when it has come to their knowledge ) . 1 sail again in a few days for Rangoon , in the Seringapatam .
