Although the weather was most unpropitious , it having poured with rain the whole of the day ,
thirty-five were present , who , after labour was over , sat down to banquet , supplied in his customary good style by Bro . Benj . Whitehouse . In the course of the evening the R . W . Prov . G . Hon . Sec , Bro . Whitehead , kept the minute-book , and requested that he might certify in it his approbation of the state in which he found the Lodge working . The customary toasts having been given , and most of them responded to in becoming terms , after a very delightful and pleasant evening , spent in the usual rational manner amongst Masons , the Brethren retired at an early hour . We may mention that the W . M . appointed for his ' officers , Bros . Ores well , S . W . ; Wareing , J . W . ; Jn . Da vies , S . D . ; J . P . Haynes , J . D . ; Waterhouse , I . G . The W . M ., on returning thanks for his health being drank , said , "I feel truly obliged to you for the kind and cordial manner in which you have drank my health , and especially to the R . It is related that King James II . once asked one of his courtiers to pull on his stocking , which duty was not performed quite to the satisfaction of the monarch , who rebuked him , observing that no one should undertake to do a thing unless he could do it well . Now , Brethren , I have this day undertaken the solemn responsibility of W . M . of this Lodge . I will not
deny that it has been my ambition to attain to this important office , but I trust mine will not prove that ' Vaulting ambition which o ' erleaps itself , and falls on t ' other side ; ' for I hope I may say , without egotism , that if I did not think I could discharge my duties , I would at once give place to ' a wiser and better man . I do not expect to shine in this chair with that lustre which has eminentl y distinguished my two immediate predecessors ; but as an old proverb says , ' What one man can do another can imitate . ' Rely upon it , Brethren , it is my purpose to try to imitate them in their past working . I lay stress on the purpose , not the
performance , for that shall be the polar star to which my compass shall be pointed , perhaps with considerable variations of the needle ; yet whatever I may do , still without the zealous co-operation of my Officers , and without your attendance , I shall be like the captain of a ship without a good crew to man it . May it never be said that ' Noah's-Ark ' foundered from the apathy of its members . May I , therefore , beg of you , Officers and Brethren , to support me by your presence whenever you possibly can attend , and thereby prove your attachment to Masonry in general , and this Lodge in particular . ' Bear in mind that
' 'Tis application , used aright , That in the end proves gainful ; 'Tis but the dull and lifeless wm-ht O Thinks labour hard and painful . ' This Lodge has , through the zeal and perseverance of P . M . s Warner and Gwynne ,
obtained a high reputation . Lot us earnestly endeavour to maintain its character , and , if possible , add new lustre to it ; at all events , let not any want of attention , nor any dereliction of duty on our part , cause the glory of the Ark to be diminished . " The R . W . P . CLM . announced , in complimentary terms , that he had appointed Rev . E . H . A . Gwynne , P . M . and B . A ., as Prov . G . Chap ., an announcement which was received with great applause by the Brethren .
