Province , and hoped to be spared for many years to preside over them . The health of the visitoi's , Rev . J . L . Prior , & c . & c , having been drunk , the Brethren separated , after having spent a night of great enjoyment .
SOMERSETSHIRE . Bath . —Royal Cumberland Lodge ( No . 48 ) . —On Thursday , the 3 rd of January , the Brethren of this Lodge assembled for the purpose of witnessing the installation of the W . M . elect , Bro . Henry John Higginson , who had filled the office of J . W . during the preceding twelve months , and who was unanimously elected to occupy that important position . The proceedings commenced by the acting W . M ., Bro . Percy Wells , raising five Brethren to the Third Degree , a ceremony which
he performed in his usual impressive manner , together with the historical lecture and the numerous illustrations on the Ancient Tracing Board of the Lodge . The W . M . then , in a speech of considerable length , which was listened to by the numerous visitors and Brethren present with marked attention , took a retrospect of the proceedings of the past year . In the course of his remarks he observed , that he had been called upon unexpectedly , in little more than a fortnight after he had invested his successor with the insignia of his office for the last year , to
preside over them in his capacity of immediate P . M ., and that during the past twelve months he had initiated sixteen gentlemen into the Order , and performed the average number of passings and raisings . The Lodge had also received an accession of four joining Brethren . He congratulated the Lodge upon the prosperous state of its finances , and the cheering prospect which lay before them ; at the same time impressing on the Brethren the necessity that existed for stringent economy , inasmuch as the "Cumberland" had become the sole lessees of the
beautiful hall in which they now met , and which they had sublet at a moderate rental to the R . A . Chapter , No . 48 , the Lodge of Instruction , and the Encampment of Antiquity , established at Bath from time immemorial . The W . M . elect was presented and addressed in the usual form , and having signified his assent to the ancient charges , was installed into the chair after the ancient manner . The W . M . invested the following officers : —Bros . Percy Wells , P . M . ; Bagshawe , S . W . ; Beach , J . W . ; Haseler , Sec . and Treas . ; Neely , S . D . ; Ashley , J . D . ; Hanham , I . G . ;
Cornish and Reynolds , Stews . ; and Hopkins , Tyler . The installing Master , at this portion of the ceremony , addressed the W . M . and Officers upon their respective duties , and concluded his eloquent harangue by giving to the Brethren the ancient exhortations . After the Lodge was closed , the Brethren adjourned to Bro . Amery ' s hotel , where a banquet of the most elegant character awaited them ; covers for thirty-five Brethren were laid , and the repast was honoured by the presence of Bro . J . J . Evans , P . Prov . S . G . W ., Bristol ; Bro . Harril , Prov . S . G . D .,
Bristol ; Bro . Dr . Tunstall , W . M ., No . 61 ; and Brethren from other Lodges . The usual loyal and other toasts were given and responded to , and the Brethren separated much gratified with the proceedings of the day . In taking a retrospect of the progress of the science in this Lodge during the last two years , it is acknowledged by universal consent that the proficiency of the Brethren is mainly to be attributed to the untiring zeal and indefatigable energy of Bro , Percy Wells , who has unceasingly persevered in making this Lodge ( in which he was initiated
less than four years ago ) , one of the best working Lodges in the world . To him is the Lodge indebted for forming the Lodge of Instruction , of which he was the first president . In Bro . Higginson the Lodge have wisely chosen one to preside over them who will carry out the good work which has been so ably begun , and we have no hesitation in affirming , that under his direction it will continue to prosper , and prove a noble example not only to the Brovince of Somerset , but to the Craft at large .
Bridgewatek . —Lodge of Perpetual Friendship ( No . 157 ) . —The anniversary of St . John the Evangelist was held by the Brethren at the Lamb Inn , in this town , in order to elect the W . M . and other Brothers . The Lodge was opened in due form , with prayers . After the usual preliminaries had been gone through , Bro . James Leaker was installed W . M . for the ensuing year .
