METROPOLITAN .

Grant Masteks' Lodge ( No . 1 ) . —At the meeting on the 21 st January , Bro . Harris , S . W . was ably installed as W . M . by Bro . Crew , Sec . and P . M . ; Bro . Sandiman was appointed S . W ., and Bro . Shuttleworth , J . W . Mr . Hose ( a brother of the alderman ) was initiated into the Order . About forty of the Brethren afterwards dined together ; and the exertions of Bros . King , Lee , and Jolly , added to the evening ' s amusements .

Lodge of . Antiquity ( No . 2 ) - ~ This ancient and venerable Lodge met at the Freemasons' Tavern on Wednesday , January 23 rd . Bro . Scott was ably installed W . M . for the ensuing year by Bro . Henderson . The visitoi-s were Bros . Harris , W . M ., No . 1 ; Matthews , P . M ., No . 11 , Prov . G . S . W . of Essex ; and Powell , No . 324 . Bros . Gengeand King were also present , and , with Bro . Jolly , enlivened the evening with their excellent singing .

Rotal Somerset-House and Inverness Lodge ( No . 4 ) . —At the meeting of this excellent Lodge , on the 28 th January , Bro . C . L . Webb , W . M ., presiding , two Brethren were passed to the 2 nd Degree , and one raised as a Master Mason . A ballot was then taken for W . M . for the ensuing year , which was declared to be unanimously in favour of Bro . Francis Roxburgh , S . W . Amongst the visitors were Bros . W . H . White , G . Sec . ; A . Bobie , Prov . G . M . for Surrey , & c . & c . Royal York Lodge of Perseverance ( No . 7 ) . — This Lodge met on Wednesday , the 16 th of January , 1856 , at the Freemasons' Tavern , when Bro . Hooper

was raised to the Sublime Degree , and a gentleman initiated into the mysteries of the Order ; both ceremonies being ably performed by Bro . Dr . Wm . Jones , P . M ., officiating for the W . M . Bro . J . S . S . Hopwood . The Brethren afterwards proceeded to the installation of their W . M . for the present year , their choice , at the last meeting of the Lodge , having been unanimously in favour of the universally and deservedly respected Bro . John Hervey , P . G . D . The ceremony of installation was performed by Bro . Dr . Jones , P . M ., and was much curtailed , it being the eighth occasion on which Bro . Hervey has been installed Master ; indeed , it was

necessary to have a special dispensation from the M . W . G . M ., Bro . Hervey being at the present time W . M . of a Lodge at Harwich . All Masonic business having "been concluded , the Brethren retired to an elegant dinner provided by the worthy proprietors of the Tavern ; and among the host of visitors present , were Bros . W . H . White , G-. S . ; Robert J . Bagshaw , Prov . G . M . for Essex ; A . A . Leveau , P . G . S . B . ; Herbert Lloyd , G . S . D . ; W . Farnfield , A . G . S . ; M . Levinson , S . W ., No . 209 ; Collard , W . M . elect , No . 209 ; G . R . Rowe , P . S . G . D . ; Locock Webb ; J . R . Sheen , P . M ., No . 237 ; W . Franklin , of the Grand Master ' s Lodge ; W .

Lee Wright , P . M ., No . 329 ; Samuel W . Hopwood , S . D ., No . 329 ; H . L . Crohn , G . S . G . C . ; E . Haward , P . M ., No . 85 ; George Chance , W . M ., No . 329 ; C . Tyler , P . M ., No . 19 ; W . H . Ahsolon , P . M ., No . 40 ; J . H . Stocqueler , Marine Lodge , Calcutta ; J . Watson , No . 229 ; H . G . Warren , P . M ., No . 202 ; W . C . Palmer , P . M ., No . 19 ; C . Robinson , P . M ., No . 8 ; John Gutyear , P . M ., No . 925 ; A . H . Rixon , No . 40 ; J . Stone ; Siccama , late of the Lodge ; and

several others . The chief feature of the proceedings at the banquet table , was the presentation of an elegant and valuable P . M . ' s jewel to Bro . J . S . S . Hopwood , voted to him by the voluntary subscription of the members of the Lodge . It was beautifully designed , and bore the following inscription : —" Presented by the Brethren of the Royal York Lodge of Perseverance , No . 7 , to Bro . J . S . S . Hopwood , P . M ., on his passing the Chair for the second time , after having been a member of the Lodge for an uninterrupted period of thirty-five years ; as a mark of their admiration of his character as a man , of his conduct as a member of the Lodge , and of their esteem and regard for him as a Brother Mason , accompanied by their best wishes for his welfare and happiness . 16 th of January , 1 . 85 (> .
