of Bro , B . M . Wm . Williams , in Byle Street ; and subsequently , in 1848 , at the Masonic Hall , Lugley Street , where might it long continue to be prosperously held . A glance at the Masters during the period from 1801 up to the present time- —except the cases of re-election—discovered that fifty-six different Brethren had been appointed to that office , in accordance with ancient custom ; yet , but in one instance had it happened that the Worshipful Master of the Albany Lodge

was at the same time Mayor of Newport . To mark that event ( which took place on the 9 th of November , 1855 ) in the annals of the Lodge , the W . M . suggested that the Mayor should present the Lodge with a seal , on which the arms of the Borough should form a material portion of the design . The ancient arms were a quaint nautilus-shaped floating hulk , with one mast and one sail ; and in order to symbolically adapt this for a Lodge seal , the words of an old song might "be taken : —

" Life as the ocean , Our Lodge the frail boat , Which over its surface , Is destined to float . " Yet ! if the Craft be well found With compass and gear , O ' er the ocean of life She may fearlessly steer ; Let Faith be her ensign , Well nailed to the mast , And Hope be her anchor , Freed ready to cast ; But the brightest of all , Let her figure-head be , That gem of our Order—Charity Let her sail be well spread , Her number be plain , That , One—Seven—Six

" May be read on the main ; So that steer where she may , Thus much will all see , That her head and our magnet Bo ever agree . Her Masters , if faithful , With plummet and line , Will guard her from shoals , Or the quicksands of time . And when she has numbered Her period in years , Will still pilot onwards , Begardless of fears , Till the haven is gained , That haven of rest , Where all who are faithful May hope to be blest . "

Such is the design for a Lodge seal , proposed to mark the event alluded to , and on the back or handle there should be engraved " Presented by Bro . John Henry Hearn , W . M ., No . 176 , and Mayor of Newport , A . L . 5855 /' whose health , aa immediate B . M . and Mayor of Newport , the W . M . then proposed . The W . B . M . the Mayor , after thanking the Brethren for their kind reception of the toast proposed by the W . M ., remarked that his many engagements during the past year jDrevented his attending Lodge more frequently than he had , and he hoped the Brethren would find that the Master they had now presiding would be more attentive to the duties of the office than the Jun . P . M . However , his year

of office had not passed off without an event ; and quite irrespective of self , he , as a Freemason , did look upon the day as a " red letter day " in the annals of the Lodge , when the W . M . of No . 176 was at the same time chief magistrate of the borough ;—that these two high offices may he held by one and the same person without incongruity , we , as Masons , know ; for initiation without admonition , is " salt without flavour . " Had the idea of marking the event alluded to emanated from himself , he should perhaps have proposed that the name of their Lodge should be changed to that of the borough , which might have been readilj managed , but the Worshipful Master ' s glowing sketch of a seal was well worthy

of attention , combining as it did the materials of association ; and if induced to colour , it certainly might be accomplished ; the words also should be printed or entered on the minute-book . The W . M . then gave the " Minderi Lodge , " like his own , one of old standing . They had , however , "the privilege of a firstborn , " their warrant having been granted by the Grand Lodge of Ireland in 1748 , consequently they have passed their centenary . But there was another centenarydrawing near for these military Brethren to celebrate , the victory of 1795 . It was on the iC Plains of Minden " they gained the " laurel wreath , " exhibited on their appointments and colours ; and it was that victory which gave the name of
