guished from the former irregular Lodge by its No ., as it was by name and in fact . Much correspondence , therefore , took place with the G . L . of Scotland , before that body could determine to accede to the request made . At the meeting of the Lodge on the 17 th ultimo , the charter just received and the correspondence relating to it were read . We have been unable to obtain further particulars , owing to the objection of the W . M . to allow anything on the subject to be published .

New R . A . Chapter in Calcutta . —The Lodge , Courage with Humanity , No . 551 , has ohtained a dispensation for opening a Boyal Arch Chapter , preparatory to applying for a charter from the S . G . R . A . C . The letter communicating the grant was read at the meeting of the Lodge held on the 27 th October , at which there was a large gathering of members and visitors , and B . W . Bro . HofF , B . G . Sec , was also present , by special request , and cordially greeted with " honours due . " The Lodge was enjoined in the letter not to reduce the fees too low , and to keep all future proceedings connected with the Chapter distinct from its own affairs .

MUSSOOBIE . Extract from a Letter , from P . Z , of Chapter St . John the Baptist , No . 922 , at Mussoorie , dated 1 st October , 1855 . — "I think it well to send you some little accounts of our recent Masonic proceedings , more especially in regard to our Royal Arch Chapter , St . John the Baptist . Knowing that Mussoorie is generally fullest from the 15 th of September to the 15 th of October , we thought it desirable to arrange our principal Boyal Arch working for some time within that

period ; and with such a purpose , for many weeks past , have been labouring to fit up the Chapter in a suitable manner . Every requisite was duly prepared ; and the appearance of the room , adorned with canopy , banners , lights , & c , was very imposing . On Tuesday evening , the 25 th September , we commenced our proceedings , after opening the Chapter in ancient form , by reading the charter granted by the Dep . Brov . Grand Superintendent for the N . W . B ., and consecrating the assembly with solemn prayer , and other usages , customary for such

purposes . We then proceeded to exalt five candidates to the Holy Degree : the duties of B . S . that evening being discharged by myself , in addition to those of B . Z . This was easily managed by placing a Bast Brincipal in one of the chairs during the time , when the services of P . S . were required ; after which , my own chair was resumed by me , before the delivery of the historical , symbolical , and mystical Lectures by the three Brincipals . Not a single usage nor rite was omitted ; and I trust that the newly-exalted Companions were each and all imbued with a sense of the noble principles and sublime tendencies of this splendid degree .

"On Saturday evening , the 29 th September , we again assembled , in order to exalt six additional candidates—making in all eleven applicants during the present season . All passed off with the same success and perfect order , which distinguished the proceedings of the previous Tuesday , the arrangement of officers being precisely similar . I may here mention that M . E . Comp . Brandon , of Cawnpore , materially assisted us by presenting to the Chapter various important requisites for our working ; and that J . Mackinnon , Esq ., a resident at Mussoorie , and a non-Mason , most kindly printed the necessary certificates ( as he also has done , upon former occasions , for the Arch , Mark , and Sup . Ex . Degrees ) .

" On Wednesday next , the 3 rd Octoher , we hold a Lodge , in order to initiate two candidates , and to pass a Brother to the 2 nd Degree . We shall probably , also , be required , ere long , to raise a member to the 3 rd Degree ; and this will most likely conclude our labours for the present season , as most of the visitors ( including , of course , the majority of our members ) will have left the Hills by the end of this month .

" I should also mention that one of our newly-exalted Comps . ( R . W . Hawkins ) presented the Chapter with a canopy for the Brincipals ; and that our worthy 2 nd Principal ( Comp . Eord ) also gave the banners . " [ From the Indian Freemasons' Friend . We heartily rejoice in learning that the course of this excellent contemporary journal is to be prolonged . We wish it all success . —Ed . F . M . & M . J
