responsible post in University College ; he was highly respected by the master and fellows of that society , and especially by the late senior fellow , Bro . the Bev . 0 . J . Bidley , M . A ., for many years the respected Prov . G . M . of the Province of Oxford . As a Freemason , Bro . Blake , in his capacity of . P . M ., in which he of course exercised considerable influence in the affairs of his Lodge , was always most kind and considerate , as far as his high sense of duty would allow him to be . He

took the Book of Constitutions for his guide in Masonic matters , and ( not that we consider that the Book of Constitutions is by any means without its faults , nor that we blame our deceased Brother for acting according to his conscience ) always , as far as lay in his power , strictly enforced their observance ; and the general feeling of the Province of Oxford was , that though Bro . Blake ' s discipline was at times irksome , yet that he enforced it from a good motive , and that he was right " in the long run . " This notice is but a feeble tribute to one so respected and so regretted for his many amiable and estimable qualities .

" Multis ille bonis nebilis occidit , Nulli flebilior quam mini , " Peace be to him !

BRO . J . C . COOK , P . M ., of No . 313 . We regret to have to record the decease of this highly respected Brother , which melancholy event took place at his residence , Dudley , at four o ' clock on the morning of the 24 th ( the night of the Masonic ball at Dudley ) , after a severe affliction of nearly eleven months—three months of which he was confined solely to his bed . The deceased Brother was Master of the Harmonic Lodge , No . 313 ,

during the year 1854 ; but has been unable to attend more than twice since the installation of his successor , Bro . W . Bruton . On Friday night , the 25 th , a Lodge of Emergency , of No . 313 , was called to consider what mark of respect could be paid by the Brethren , when it was resolved that , in consequence of Bro . Cook ' s resignation having been sent in two months since , the Brethren could not

have the formality of a Masonic funeral . It was also resolved that the Brethren ofNos . 313 , 730 , and 838 should be invited to meet at the hotel , Dudley , on Friday , the 1 st of February , at noon ( the day appointed for the funeral ) , and accompany the cortdge to the place of interment . The attendance , it is anticipated , will be very large . For a notice of the Brother we refer our readers to the account of the Dudley Lodge , Worcestershire ,

Boyal Freemasons' Benevolent Institution eoe aged Masons and their Widows . —A committee has been formed with the view of endeavouring to improve the rules and develop the resources of this institution , so as to make it of greater value to the Craft than it at present is . The institution is certainly one of great interest , and has never received that support its usefulness demands .
