J j Brethren of the Mark ; for ,- after all , who would change a diploma of world-wide significance , an undoubted passport of admission to Lodges and Chapters , both foreign and colonial , for any piece of parchment of merely local celebrity , which is unrecognized and unknown by all supreme Masonic authorities . Returning to the business of the Lodge—ballots were then taken for Brethren , who were pronounced unanimously elected , and two Brethren being in attendance , who had
been accepted at previous rneetings , viz ., Bro . J . Bremner , P . M ., No . 120 , and Bro . Longford , ISTo , 886 ; the > R . W . M . proceeded to advance them to the noble degree of a Mark Master Mason ; after which the Brethren were reminded that the next subject for their consideration was the election of R . W . M . Treasurer , & c , for the ensuing year . The R . W . Bro . Powell , D . Prov . G . M . of the province of Bristol ( one of the earliest members of the Canynges Lodge of Mark Masters ) , then rose and said , as it was necessary for the right performance of the duties of Master ,
that a Brother should be selected well skilled in the art , he would briefly propose , as a worthy successor to their present R . W . M ., the name of one whom he thought would be most acceptable to the whole of the Brethern , and a Brother answering in every respect to the requirements of so responsible a position . He would , therefore , move that Bro . John Lihten , P ; M . and W . M ., Wo . 408 , S . W , of that Lodge , be elected R . W . M . for the ensuing year . This proposition was seconded by Bro . Low , W . M ., No . 221 , conductor , and was carried by acclamation . Bro . Joseph
John Evans , P . M . and P . Z ., after being re-elected to-the office of Treasurer , congratulated the Lodge on the state of its funds , which , he remarked , notwithstanding the heavy calls for new furniture , & c ., all of which had been paid , were so far from being exhausted , that he was happy to report a respectable balance in hand ; which-gratifying ^ atement was received with much applause . The R . W . M . then announced his intention of being present at the opening of the new MarkLodge at Cheltenham , on Monday , the 4 th October , and solicited as many of the Brethren
( ^ as could make it convenient ) to accompany him on that occasion . Muehdnterest is felt by the members of this Lodge in the event referred to—many Brethren of the new sister Lodge having received their advancement at the hands of the present R . W . M . of the Canynges Lodge . Other business having been disposed of , the Lodge was closed in regular form at half-j ) ast ten p . m . The proceedings of this Lodge throughout the period of its existence , have been of the most satisfactory description , the Brethren vying with each other in that mutual interchange of kindly amenities so characteristic of true Masons . If clouds of despondency have
arisen , they Jiave with us " never been to the manner born ; " and if they have drifted from am . eastern sky , " blown by the idle wind which we regard not , " they break in sunshine on our western shores .

PROVINCIAL CHAPTERS . Hertfordshire . — - Watford Chapter ( No . 580 . )—The regular meeting of this Chapter was held on Monday , Sept . 27 , at the Freemasons' Hall , Watford ; present , Comp . George Francis , as M . E . Z ,, in the absence of Comp . John Sedgwick ; Comp . William Stuart , Prov . G . Sup .: Comps . T . A . Ward , Burcholl Home , P . Zs ., & c .
Bro . Charles Henry Finch , of the Watford Lodge , was exalted into this sublime degree . The entire ceremonial was gone through in Comp . Francis ' s able manner , Comp . Burchell Home undertaking the duties of P . Soj . The historical and sym bolical explanations were given by Comp . How , P . Z ., No . 593 ; and the mystical by Comp . Francis . Comp . Goodyear was elected to the office of El ., vacant by the death of Comp . King . The Companions afterwards dined together .
