A ballot was then taken for three gentlemen as candidates , who were
duly elected ; one of them , Mr . John Marshall Goude , of Hinckley , was initiated by theD . Prov . G . M . The revised by-laws were considered and approved . Two gentlemen were then proposed as candidates for initiation at the next meeting . The very elegant and costly loving cup" was received from the universally respected W . M . and Prov . G . M . Earl Howe , G . CMy accompanied by tlie following Past
letter , addressed to Bro . Cottrell , Master of the Lodge : — "Gopsall , Sept . 25 th , 1858 . My dear Sir and Brother , —The serious illness of my little boy has prevented my writing formally to present the little cup I ventured to offer to the Malta Lodge on the members electing me tfyeir W , M . for twelve months , but I cannot resist now requesting your acceptance of it . Age arid infirmity will prevent my attending to my duties as I ought , but I trust both now and hereafter , I may be remembered as a cordial well wisher to the Hinckley community in general , and
to its Masonic Lodge in particular , when this loving cup is devoted , in moments of festivity to the happiness of the Masonic body and to all mankind , without distinction of rank or sect . Believe mo very faithfully and fraternally , Howe , Prov . G . M . C ., Leicester . " The cup , which is extremely elegant in design and of capacious siae / bears on one side the following inscription : " The Knights of Malta Lodge , No / 5 8 , Hinckley , " and on the opposite shield the arms and nmtto of the noble donor . It was resolved unanimously that an address of thanks to his lordship be prepared , and written xrpon vellum , ahd after being signed by the Members of the Lodge , presented to his lordship at GfopsalL Tho lodge was then closed , and the Brethren adjourned to refreshment .
