festival m January next . Bro . Emmens took this opportunity of thanking the brethren for their support at the last election , which enabled the widow of their late esteemed Bro . Barnstor : ^ felt most comfortable . Bro . Kennedy , P . M ., and Treasurer , then addressed the Lodge , having a most painful duty to perform— -that of acquainting the Brethren that their much respected Brother Lewis Solomons had been suddenly deprived of his "best and dearest friend—Mrs . Solomons , who was well known to the memfoers of this Lodge as a great supporter of the " Old Concord Balls , " given annually in aid
of the charities . Bro . Kennedy concluded by proposing that the Secretary should be empowered to send a letter of condolence to Bro . Solomons , expressive of the sympathy of the Lodge , and their regret for his irreparable loss . Bro . Maney seconded the motion unanimously . Lodge was then closed , and the Brethren adjourned to supper , Bro . Jackson in the chair , supported by P . M's . Bros . Emmens , Nicholson , Booth , Kennedy , George ( Jurton , and by visitors , Bros . Wilcox , P . M ., No . 22 ; Nunn , No . 156 ; Pearce , No . 156 ; Pearce , No . 72 ; W . Joppa Lodge ( No . 223 ) . —This Lodge re-assembled , after the summer vacation , on Monday , October 4 th , at the Albion Tavern , Aldersgate Street , Bro . Joel Phillips presiding as W . M . The first business was the initiation of two gentlemen into the Order , which was performed by the W . M . Bro . Rohertson , of North Shields , was then passed to the degree of a Fellow Craft . Two applications of Brethren for assistance then came on for consideration , and three guineas were awarded to each . The Lodge was then closed in due form , and the Brethren to the number of sixty sat down to an excellent dinner . The usual loyal and Masonic toasts followed , and the evening passed off to the entire satisfaction of
every one present . Lion and Lamb Lodge ( No . 227 ) . —The first meeting of the season was held on Thursday , October 7 th , there being present Bro . Tappolet , W . M ., eight Past Masters , and several other members of the Lodge . Bro . Sotheran , jun ., was passed to the second degree . Bro . Breitling , P . M ., pursuant to a notice given at the previous Lodge , said , the object of his motion being such as he knew would meet with the ready consent of every member of No . 227 , it was not necessary for him to say much
to recommend it to their notice , it being to commemorate the fifty years' membership of Bro . Sotheran . Some years back the Lodge had presented to their esteemed friend a jewel , in reward for services performed ; but what was now asked had another aim , it was to preserve the remembrance of a Brother continuing attached to his parent Lodge for so long a period , and to evince their gratitude to the G . A . O . T . U . for his preservation in health and strength . Such rnemorials ; such acknowledgments , evinced that their principles are sound , and their teachings
more sincere than the world generally give them credit for . He ( Bro . Breitling ) was confident that all were united in the hope that Bro . Sotheran would be spared to them for some years to command he concluded by proposing , " That a jewel be presented to Bro . Sotheran , to commemorate his fifty years' membership of the Lion and Lamb Lodge . " Bro . Stanhorough briefly seconded the proposition . Tho W . M ., in putting the motion , said , it was pleasing to find the proposal originated
with one of the oldest Past Masters , and recommended by a Junior Master ; it proved the perfect unanimity of the Lodge . It was carried unanimously . The testimonial is to be presented on the 4 th of November . Bro . Sotheran was initiated on the 3 rd of November , 1808 . Bro . Carter , W . M ,, No . 165 , Bros .
