subsequently acknowledged a similar compliment on behalf of the Past Masters , and availed himself of the opportunity to present a P . M ' s . jewel to Bro . Hazard , P . M ., for the able and courteous manner in which he had discharged the duties of Master of the St . John's Lodge during the year 1857 . The jewel , manufactured by Bro . A . D . Loewenstark , is very beautiful in design , and similar to those generally given by the Lodge . It bore the following inscription : —'' Presented to Bro . fe . Hazard , by the St . John ' s Lodge , No . 196 , in testimony of its esteem for his attention
to his duties , as well as to the comfort and welfare of the Lodge generally during his year of office as Worshipful Master in 1857 . Hampstead , 5 th October , 1858 . " Bro . Aldrich also presented Bro . Hazard with a massive silver Masonic tankard , which he stated several members of the Lodge had subscribed to purchase as a mark of the personal regard and high esteem which they entertained for him . The tankard , of rich and unique design , was decorated with medallions , on which were represented groups of flowers , & c . Bound the base was a rich border of shell and
scroll work , giving an effective support to the whole ; the arms of the Lodge were uniquely engraved , as also Bro . Hazard ' s initials . The testimonial bore the following inscription : — " Presented to Bro . B . Hazard * by the members of the St . John ' s Lodge , No . 196 , in testimony of their esteem for his attention to his ditties , and to the comfort and welfare of the Lodge during his year of office as Worshipful Master in 1857 . Hampstead ?! . 5 th October , 1858 . " The cup was manufactured by Bro . John Caney , jeweller , of 53 , Cheapside , and reflects much credit on that brother ' s
taste and workmanship . Bro . Hazard returned thanks , and in a feeling speech , which was warmly applauded , expressed his gratitude for the unexpected manner in which his services had been recognized . He assured the Lodjge he would wear the jewel and keep the testimonial to the end of his life , and that nothing would induce him to tarnish cither . In the course of the evening Bro . Aldrich proposed i ( Success to the Benevolent Institution / ' and reminded the Brethren present that the annual festival of the charity would be held on the 26 th of January next . Bro . T . J . Smith , the mayor of Melbourne , was to have been present at the festival but was prevented by urgent business in Scotland .
