THE EQIUL ^ TEilAL . TRIANGLE . ' . .. ' .- . ' TO THE EDITOR OF THE FREEMASONS' MAGAZINE AND MASONIC MIRROR . Dear Sir and Brother ,--Yovi r correspondent P . Z ., in the number for March 3 rd , of the Ereemason's Magazine , referring to my paper on the Equilateral Triangle , fee ., " has pointed out a difficulty in representing the lesser number of the names of these Grand Masters as respectively equal to the number 6 . This difficulty has arisen from the circumstance that P . Z . has taken the final letter of the name Hiram , as
representing the number 600 . The employment of the final forms of the letters k , m , n , p , and ts , as the signs of hundreds , above 400 , is , however , a comparatively modern innovation , and is not adopted by the writers on the Kabalistic Gematria , In these the values of the twenty-two letters as they stand in the Hebrew alphabet are retained , without reference to their lengthened form as finals , and the number 600 is expressed by the combination of Tau = 400 and Hesh = 200 , & c .
The final < m in the name Hiram must , therefore , be valued , without reference to its form as a final letter , as the number 40 ; when the lesser number of the name of the King of Tyre , as it is written in the Book of Kings , will be found to be equal to 6 , the same as those of the other two Grand Masters at the building of the temple .
I feel much obliged to P . Z . for having pointed out what would naturally , according to the numerical value of the Hebrew letters , as given in the Hebrew grammars , appear to be an error in my paper , and thus giving me an opportunity of explaining it . I am , dear Sir and Brother , yYoiirs fraternally , March 4 , 1858 , ' D . W , Nash ,
GEATEFUL THANKS . TO THE EDITOR OF THE FREEMASONS * MAGAZINE AND MASONIC MIRROR . Sir and Brother , — "Under an obligation of gratitude to my Brethren where kindness has been shown , as well as to render help where required , I have thought it right to crave a small space in your Magazine publicly to acknowledge the
kindness shown to a dear sister by the Brethren at Melbourne in her extremity ; who having been taken to Australia with four young children , and giving birth to the fifth in the Indian Ocean in a heavy gale , on arriving there , was stripped of her money and left , in a very delicate state , with her children , her husband having eloped with a strange woman .
I feel under a deep obligation to the good Brethren , the Worshipful the Mayor of Melbourne , and his good lady , for their sympathy and support . —I am , Sir and Brother , Yours fraternally , Sheemess , IZth MarcJi , 1858 , Wiliam Darwsy .
