Hull Masonic Amateur Theatricals . — We have never seen the large Music-hall , hi Jarratt-street , crowded by a gayer or more delighted audience than on Tuesday evening , February 16 , on the occasion of the second annual amateur theatrical performance , in aid of the Minerva Lodge Benevolent Fund for Poor and Distressed Freemasons . And we must say , that not only did the performances merit the crowded room and the enthusiastic applause , but that they were , in many respects , equal to the very best professional
exhibitions of the kind . Amateur theatricals are generally dreary entertainments , but the concluding farce of Tuesday night caused the sides of many a veteran play-goer to shake with laughter . The pieces selected for representation were the "Camp at Chobham , " " Blue Beard , " and " Crinoline . " Bro . Bethel Jacobs , who was the Mr . Cadbury of the first piece , the Blue Beard of the second , and the Mr . Coobiddie of the third , displayed wonderful versatility and dramatic ability . He is in every respect an admirable actor . Bro . Holden ( , who
was quiet and gentlemanlike as Captain Darner in the first piece , and < so so ^ as Selim in " Blue Beard , astonished the audience by his inimitable representatinn of Nancy Bitters ( a sort of mixture of Dickens ' s Marchioness and Sairey Gamp ) in the concluding farce . It was a perfect study of a specimen of a wellknown class of domestic plagues , and the shouts of laughter with which it was hailed attested the fidelity of the portraiture . Bro . Bull , who must guard
against a slight tendency to over-acting , played Fadlallah in " Blue Beard " admirably , and Bro . C . Wells ¦ " made up " capitally as an orderly and a policeman . The assistance of Miss Booth , Miss M'Gregor , and Mrs . Ware , from the Queen ' s Theatre , was most valuable , and on this , as on a former occasion , the Brethren have to thank Messrs . Wolfenden and Melbourne for their kind and liberal
aid . The stage management was from first to last under the superintendence of Bro . S . Moseiy , W . M . of the Minerva Lodge , and Bro . Arden , P . M ., and it was obvious that they had most ably and carefully discharged their important duties . Altogether , as we said , the evening ' s entertainment was a most delightful one , and we heartily hope these Masonic amateur theatricals will be perennial . Upwards of fifty pounds has been added by the performance to the Benevolent Fund . —• Hull Packet .
Southport . — -A Masonic Ball was held at the Town Hall , on the 5 th Feb ., under very distinguished patronage , when a number of the Brethren , amounting , with their wives and daughters , to upwards of 220 , enjoyed a very pleasant evening . The profits , £ 21 , were handed over to the Poor Distressed Weavers ' Fund , in the parish of North Meols , thus attempting to combine charity with
amusement . It speaks well for the Southport Brethren of the "Mystic tie , ' that though their Lodge , No . 889 , is but four years old , they have by a donation of twenty guineas to the Strangers' Charity made one of their members a lifegovernor , and have given , in addition , a sum of £ 15 to that excellent institution , and £ 10 to the Bath Charity .
