BEO . JOHN" M'EARLANE HEARD . We have to record the death , at Truro , on the 18 th inst ., of Bro . John M'Farlane Heard , P . M . of the Phoenix Lodge of Honour and Prudence , No . 415 , P . Prov . G . Steward 1848 , and Prov . G . Director of Ceremonies since that date . The deceased Bro . was also a Knight Templar and a Royal Arch . Few persons of his class have filled so influential a position in the county of Cornwall as he has done ; a thorough man of business , possessed of strong sense and sagacity , kind in demeanour , generous in feeling , and of strong attachment to his friends , he held that position with the greatest advantage to his Brethren and fellow-men . For
many years he has been among the most energetic of the town council of Truro , which , from his business habits , will by his decease sustain considerable loss . He was also connected , as an officer and otherwise , with other public local institutions , which will also deeply feel his loss . The funeral of the deceased Brother took place at Trnro on Monday last . Throughout the forenoon all the principal shops were closed , and the number who assembled to follow the remains of the deceased to the grave was beyond all precedent . It being the wish of the deceased that his remains should be conveyed to their last resting-place and interred with private Masonic ceremonies , such as were consistent with the constitutions of the
Craft , and not with the pomp of insignia , jewels , or orders , requiring a dispensation from the Prov . G . M ., upwards of sixty of the Brethren voluntarily assembled at the Council Hall , with the distinctive badges of mourning , a band of white crape on the left arm , above the elbow , and sprigs of acacia in the coat and right hand . In the absence of the Prov . G . M ., D . Prov . G . M ., or Past D . Prov . G . M ., Bro . R . Pearce ,
of Penzance , the proceedings were opened by Bro . J . O . Mayne , the W . M . of the Phoenix Lodge , No . 415 , Truro , on whom that duty devolved . Bro . Mayne read a most feeling letter from Bro . Pearce , P . D . Prov . G . M . and Treasurer , expressing the utmost regret at being prevented from attending , and at the same time ¦ stating the high respect and esteem with which he has ever regarded the late Bro .
