At the conclusion of the service , a collection was made in aid of the funds of the Kent County Opjhthalmic Hospital and the West Kent Infirmary ' , about £ 17 being received . On the return of the Prov . Grand Lodge to the Town Hall ,
The R . W . Prov . G . M ., Bro . Chas . Purton Cooper , Q . O ,, said , that by a plan which he had introduced into the province , nine out of their fourteen Lodges had been made life governors of the two Masonic Schools—the Boys and the Girls —and they were that day enabled to add a tenth to the list—the Dartford Lodge . The sum of twenty guineas was then votedfor the purpose .
The Pro v . G . Mv , before closing the Lodge ; wished to make a few observations relative to a slight change which , he had made in the usual arrangements that day , He was anxious at all times to comply to the utmost with the ' constitutions-. When he was first appointed Prov , G . M . he found a practice existing of opening the Prov . Grand Lodge within a private Lodge , the consequence of which was that the private Lodge frequently separated without being closed . Most undoubtedly as the Prov . Grand Lodge was the superior body , it ought to be opened
independently of any private Lodge . The Belvidere Lodge , in connection with which the Prov . Grand Lodge met that day , had in an earlier part of the morning held a meeting in another place for the transaction of business but he had opened the Prov . G-rand Lodge as the superior body , in accordance with the principle adopted by the supreme Grand Lodge , a practice to which , he proposed to adhere for the future ; If he had not introduced the change sooner it was only because his attention had not been drawn to the subject ;
but the instant it was so drawn , he saw the propriety of the course he had now adopted . As he was in the habit of reading all that was written relative to the management of their Order , he might observe that another change in their general system had been proposed , w"hich he had not thought it desirable to make . The Brethren were aware that properly Prov . Grand Lodge only consisted of the Past Masters , actual Masters , and Wardens of the Lodges in the province ; but a practice had grown up of allowing other Brethren to be present . If he had not thought it
his duty to alter that practice , it was because he was aware that there were no important subjects to be brought before them for discussion , but whenever it did occur that they had such business before them , he hoped some Brother would call his attention to the fact of there being those present who were not members of Frov . Grand Lodge ; he should then feel it his duty to request all those not duly qualified to be present to retire for a time , and he was sure the request would be most readily complied with .
Yotes of thanks were then passed to the Rev . Dr . Stewart for the use of the church , to his worship the Mayor , for the use of the Town Hall , to the Prov , Grand Chaplain for his sermon , & c , and the Prov . Grand Lodge was then closed with the accustomed solemnities . In addition to the Brethren already named as present , we observed Bros . Bisgood , D . Prov . G . M . ; Ashley , P . D . Prov . G . M . ; Hallowes , P . Prov . S . G . W . ; C . G . Whittaker , P . Prov . S . G . W . ; Sputhgate , P . Prov . S . G . W . ; Keddell , P . Prov . S . G . W . ; Campbell , P . Prov . S . G . W . ; Vale , P . Prov . S . G . W . of Herefordshire ; James Delmar ,
P . Prov . S . G . W . ; the Rev . W . A . Hill , Prov . G . Chaplain of Worcestershire ; Harvey Boys , P . Prov . S . G . W . ; Pike , P . Prov . S . G . W . ; Charles Isaacs , Prov . G . Sec . ; Jones , P . Prov . G . Reg . ; Cruttenden , P . Prov . G . Reg . ; Windeyer , P . Prov . G . Reg . ; Saunders , Prov . G . Treas . ; Sargeant , P . Prov . G . Reg . ; Townsend , P . Prov , G . Reg . ; Pearson , P . Prov . G . D . ; Philpott , P . Prov . G . D . ; Munn , P . Prov . G . D . ; Quait , P . Prov . G . D . ; Cruttenden , P . Prov . G . S . B . ; Watson , P . Prov . G . S . B . ; Higgins , P . Prov . G . S . B . ; Baxter , P . G . Steward ; and about two hundred other Brethren .
THE BANQUET . Shortly after six o ' clock a large portion of the Brethren adjourned to the Corn Exchange , where a very elegant banquet had been provided by Bro . Sidney Spencer , of the Mitre Hotel ; the Brethren having , by permission of the Prov . G . M ,, divested themselves of their Masonic clothing in consequence of the heat of the weather . However satisfactory this arrangement may be as regards the majority
