Your correspondent was invited to visit and deliver a Masonic address recently in the old Lodge at Alexandria , Virginia , of which Lodge George Washington was the first Master . I sat in the chair , a large arm-chair lined with leather , in which his majestic form had often sat ; handled the
gavel which his hand had wielded , and examined with all the curiosity the occasion was so well calculated to inspire the various evidences of his attachment to Masonry , which are still preserved . The scene was further graced by the presence of the Grand Masters of New Hampshire and Minnesota , and the Senior GrandWarden of Ohio .
There are Grand Councils or governing bodies of the Order of Royal and Select Masters , occupying each a state , in the states of Alabama , Connecticut , Georgia , Louisiana , Ohio , Pennsylvania , Texas , Vermont , Maine , Kentucky , Tennessee , Missouri , New York , Illinois , Iowa , and perhaps , others . In these are combined about one hundred subordinate councils that work the degrees styled Royal Master , and Select Master .
The latter is exceedingly beautiful , and com and the beauty of its maxims to every mind . The fees for the two degrees vary from five dollars to fifteen in the several states ; in Kentucky v ^^ fi dollars ; in Tennessee ( not five miles from my residence ) , ten dollars . The moral of the system , if not the system itself , is derived r according to I 3 r . Mackey , from various legends connected with the Scotch Rite , and its design is to supply defects In the degrees of the Royal Arch .
The Masonic Signet and Journ poravily suspended ; the Masonic ^^ fe 5 < 3 « y , at Chicago , Illinois , has ceased ' publishing .. It is becoming known that we have too many periodicals of a Masonic cliaracter for the demand .

There is a variety of side or honorary degrees conferred in the United States , of which the very names are scarcely known to you , Some of them are solemn and impressive , with a tendency to good ; others , trivial and ludicrous . Amongst the latter are such queer imaginations as " The Thousand and One , " " The Knights of the White Rod , " « The Knights of Birmingham , " " The Cable Tow , " & c . Amongst the former class are
" The Seven Golden Candlesticks , " << The Eureka Hiatus , " " The Secret Monitor , " " The Knights of Constantine , " and many others , None of these are conferred as Masonic degrees , nor is there any fee demanded of their recipients , they are usually brought in at the closing of the Lodge when the jaded mind resorts to something more stirring than the solemn but valuable precepts of the ancient Craft , and they serve the purpose , so
far as my observation goes , of promoting good fellowship . Some of our Grand Lodges have passed resolutions deprecating the practice of these side degrees , as turning away attention from the regular work , but it is generally considered that such matters lie out of the pale of Grand Lodge legislation .
