Ellisdon , the cordial thanks of the Lodge were voted to Bro . Thomas Hall for the able manner in -which he had carried out the duties of W . M . during the last two years . The annual St . John ' s festival was celebrated on Thursday , June 24 , by a sumptuous banquet , served in the Lodge room by Bro . Salter , of the Cups Hotel . The

Pattison said it was his happy privilege to offer as a toast the health the captain of their little band , Bro . Edward Williams , who had been selected by the unanimous
voice of the Lodge to be its W . M . during the ensuing year . He looked , upon it as mark of respect to the Lodge , that a gentleman who had on more than one occasion filled the office of chief magistrate of a borough like Colchester , should he ready a second year to undertake the duties of the mastership ; while , on the other hand , it was no small compliment for any man , whatever might be his position in society , to be selected on two occasions to be Master of one of the most ancient Lodges in the kingdom . ( Cheers . ) He was sure it must he a source of satisfaction to the brethren generally , to see the chair so ably filled : and he
hoped they should all rally round Mm , so that at the end of the year , while he would be able to say he had not repented the task he had undertaken , they might congratulate themselves upon the choice they had made , and upon the able manner in which the office had been filled . ( Cheers . ) The W . M . said he should be , indeed , most wanting in gratitude if he did not appreciate the high compliment they had been pleased to pay him . He trusted that from the moment he joined the Craft he had never been wanting in the desire to advance the prosperity of Masonry , or in readiness to make whatever sacrifices of time and other matters
that were necessary for the welfare of the Craft , and the discharge of any duties that had devolved upon him in connection with it . ( Hear , hear . ) He was satisfied that the more a man saw of Freemasonry the more he must become attached to it ; and he trusted that under his rule the brotherhood of this Lodge would continue to be distinguished by that genuine harmony of feeling which had prevailed under his predecessor , and which was the essential characteristic of the Order . ( Cheers . ) The W . M . then proposed the health of the immediate P . M ., Bro . Hall ,- observing that the chair of the Angel Lodge had never been filled
more satisfactorily than during the last two years . ( Cheers . ) Bro . Hall , in returning thanks , said it afforded him the highest gratification to be assured that his humble services during the time he had been honoured by holding the mastership of the Lodge had been in any degree satisfactory to the brethren who were members of it . ( Cheers . ) He felt it a great honour to have been chosen on two occasions to be master of one of the most ancient Lodges in England ; he had met with every kindness and courtesy in that position ; and if his sincere wishes and endeavours to serve them faithfully had been in the main successful , he felt amply
repaid for any trouble the performance of those duties might have involved . ( Cheers . ) Bro . Ellisdon proposed the healths of the Senior and Junior Wardens , who respectively returned thanks . The W . M . proposed . " The health of the Board of Installed Masters , " remarking upon the important part filled by them in the working of a Lodge , and especially thanking Bro . Forbes for the efficient assistance he had rendered in the ceremonial of installation . ( Cheers . ) Bro . Forbes , in acknowledging the toast , said it had been his happy privilege for some
fifteen or sixteen years to be a Past Master of the Order , and to have taken a leading part in the proceedings of several Lodges of which he had been a member . It was the duty of every Past Master to take an active share in the management of his Lodge , and he was sure those Brethren who had filled the office of Master in this Lodge in years gone by had done their best in every way to forward the interests of Masonry in general , and of this Lodge in particular ; and had thereby earned from their Brethren a deep debt of gratitude , ( Cheers . )
