In arranging any Masonic ceremony on an architectural occasion , care should be taken that Druids , Odd Fellows , Foresters , Rechabites , & c , are not allowed to break in and interfere with rites with which they have no connection and in which they have no privilege . Referring to the great Masonic event of the week—the inauguration of the Miasonic Hall at Edinbit i ^ h- ~ we notice that the style adopted is Ionic ; yet why such style was chosen it is difficult to say . claims on the Craft , although in the last century Ionic , and Doric , an d Corinthian Were commonly adopted for Masonic halls and Lodge rooms . What would be more consistent with the history of the Craft is a mediaeval hall , and we invite the attention of our professional readers to this . We should like to see at the next Architectural Exhibition some designs for a
Masonic Hall and a Lodge Room in the various mediaeval styles . Here is good scope for the medievalist , and the emblems can be well worked in for ornamentation . The mediseval styles are strictly consistent with the working of the three Craft degrees and the Lodge constitutions , and some of the fine old halls of guild in this country , in the Netherlands , and in Germany , would afford some good types .
Another set of styles far preferable to Ionic are the Egyptian , the Assyrian , and the other styles of the east Mediterranean , older than the Greek styles . Those of our readers who will refer to the Crystal Palace courts will remember what good effects could be produced by the proper adaptation of Egyptian , or Assyrian for instance . In some of the French Lodges , in the working of the high degrees , the
change of architectural decorations is strictly attended to , and produces very good results . Under the arrangements attempted by Grand Lodge for forming a new provincial organization in Canada , recorded in the Freemasons * Magazine , is the appointment of Mr . Wm . Shordiche , of Quebec , as Prov . G . Supt . of Works .
Here is a chapter of architectural and Masonic history as yet unapproached , and that is the art of Craft buildings , now rather copious , and , as we have intimated , forming rather a neglected branch of architecture . Masonic halls and Lodge rooms are now becoming numerous : witness the
Freemasons' Halls in London , Edinburgh , Calcutta , New York , Melbourne , & c , and it is desirable to have some record of these structures . We trust some of our professional readers will bestow a little attention on this subject , for it will be found that Masonry has niade a considerable contribution to architecture .
We were going to say—the fine art of architecture ; but at the anniversary dinner of the Society of Arts , last week , the festive authorities devoted one table to the representation of the " fine arts and architecture : " an exclusion of architecture from the domain of the arts , rather equivocal in these days , and against which Mr . Dillon remonstrated .
Reverting to Masonic halls , we may remind our readers that the new limited liability law affords facilities , not previously allowed , for erecting such buildings , on the same system as is adopted in our colonies and the United States . Many towns of much smaller resources than ours are
