OUR ARCHITEGTXTEAL CHAPTER .
The proposition in the last number of the Freemasons' Magazine , to give a series of biographical sketches of eminent Masons , is one that very much interests architects , since so many members of that profession have been members of the Craft , and it is to be hoped that some correspondents will come forward to assist " Scriba" in his praiseworthy undertaking . " Seriba" has in preparation , he says , memoirs of Sir Christopher Wren and James Gibbs . For the life of the former he will find materials in
the works of a Brother , James Elmes . Sir John Soane is especially worthy of commemoration , not only because he was a worthy member of the Craft , but because he served many important offices , and rendered many services to it . Some of the architectural Brethren , such as S . W . Daukes , T . M . Nelson , B . Albano , and James Elmes , might bestow a little labour in illustrating this department of Masonic biography . Another copious chapter will be the musical biography , including the song writers
Dibdin and Burns , and the composers Arnold , Kelly , Webbe , and Elvey . There are others besides Thornhill and Bailey to afford an artistic chapter , and in time each branch of the subject will obtain copious illustration at the hands of the correspondents of the Magazine . When the Magazine is so far advanced as to use up the home materials , tliere are foreign Masons enoug to furnish materials for the continuation of the series , not forgetting Frederick the Great , Voltaire , Mirabe & u , Bailly , Condorcet , Sieyes , and many a man of science .
It is much to be regretted that the archives of the Grand Lodge are in such a condition that they entail great labour on any inquirer ; but there is no reason why they should entail expense . It is now an admitted principle in the national record offices ( and Masonic authorities cannot afford to be less liberal ) that searches for literary purposes should be gratuitous ; and whether these searches entail serious obstruction to the proper discharge of the business in the Grand Secretary ' s office or not , no fee should be
charged for searching , but any applicant applying to search , for literary purposes , and being recognized as having suitable qualifications , should be admitted to make such searches . It is now becoming a matter of some interest to ascertain what influence Masonry has exercised on the national mind at various periods in the last century and this , and it is material for this purpose to know the names of leading members who have been connected with the Craft , It would be a matter of considerable interest to
