" ] Australia , celebrated in Europe as the "Land of Gold , " and boundless undeveloped wealth , which the industrious emigrant has but to reach to accomplish his most sanguine expectation , is but imperfectly , it is imagined , known to many with regard to its social institutions , and particularly with respect to the extension of Freemasonry among its population .
The Masonic Brother , on his arrival in Sydney , the metropolis of New South Wales , while viewing on all sides the evidences of commercial enterprise , feels himself surrounded , to a great extent , by similar opportunities of Masonic intercourse to which he had been accustomed in the mother country . There are in Sydney five Lodges working under the English constitution , viz .: —« Lodge of Australia , No . 548 ; Lodge of Hannony , No . 814 ; Samaritan Lodge
No . 843 ; Zetland Lodge of Australia , No . 941 ; and the Cambrian Lodge , No , 942 ; besides many others in the principal towns of the interior . There are also three Lodges under the Irish , and two under the Scotch constitutions . PROVINCIAL GKAND LODGE .
The first meeting of the Prov . Grand Lodge for the year 1858 was held , at the Freemasons' Hall on the 12 th February . The proceedings were conducted by the Worshipful D . Prov . G . M , Bro . J . Williams , with his usual ability . The continued prolonged absence of the R . W . Prov . G-. M ., Bro . Sir S . 0 . Gibbes , who resides in New Zealand , is much i-egretted by the Brethren in the colony , the Prov . G . M . not having been in Sydney since his installation , a considei'able time
since . The want of a resident Prov . G . M . is much complained of . Board of General Purposes . —Bro . Isaac Aaron is the president of this board , and has been elected to that position for the third time . This gentleman has been a great benefactor to the Craft for years , and by his strenuous exertions has kept many Lodges together when they could scarcely get a meeting . The last office this Brother tilled was that of Prov . G . S . W . This board , in connection
often have opportunities of reciprocating it , if not to the whole Lodge here , a > t least to those members of it whom , following the path of duty , they might again meet with in distant parts of the world . Some other toasts having been duly honoured , and the evening ' s enjoyment much enhanced by the excellent singing of Bros . Law , Ellison , and Shannon , the Brethren parted , much gratified by the harmony of the meeting .
